Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated Arcane principal holding BOTH the registries:update and registries:test permissions, plus a pre-existing generic (non-ECR) registry entry that already has a stored encrypted token. The attacker changes the registry URL to an attacker-controlled host WITHOUT supplying a replacement token (omitted or empty token field); the vulnerable normalizeRegistryServerAddressInternal does not restrict the destination host, so the preserved credential is decrypted and transmitted on test/login. Limiting factors: exploitation is gated by those two specific registry permissions (not available to unprivileged users), depends on a stored credential existing, and does not apply to ECR-type registries which were excluded from the vulnerable path.

Impact

This is a credible, moderately-high priority credential-disclosure flaw rather than a hype-driven high-CVSS score. The vendor CVSS:3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:N, 8.5) is internally consistent with the mechanism: a network-reachable, low-complexity action performed by an already-authenticated operator that leaks a secret belonging to a separate security authority (the external registry), justifying the scope change and High confidentiality impact. The key limiting signal is PR:L - exploitation requires an existing user who already holds the registries:update and registries:test permissions, so this is a privilege-abuse/insider or post-compromise escalation path, not an unauthenticated internet drive-by. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public exploit was provided in the input, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; the only 'code' available is the upstream FIX diff (PR #3317), which is not an attack POC. Net: real and worth patching promptly where Arcane manages registries, but the authentication prerequisite and the niche product footprint keep realistic mass-exploitation risk lower than the 8.5 alone suggests.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An Arcane user who holds the registries:update and registries:test permissions edits an existing generic container registry, changing only its URL to a host the attacker controls and leaving the token field empty. When the registry connection is tested, Arcane decrypts the previously stored registry PAT/password and sends it to the attacker-controlled host during login, handing over valid registry credentials. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; only the vendor's fix in PR #3317 is available.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 16, 2026

Arcane versions prior to 2.5.0 disclose stored container-registry credentials to an attacker-controlled host: an authenticated principal holding both the registries:update and registries:test permissions can repoint an existing generic (non-ECR) registry entry to a URL they control without supplying a replacement token, causing the preserved encrypted PAT or password to be decrypted and sent to that host during RegistryLogin/TestRegistry. The issue is rated CVSS 8.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:N) and classified as CWE-200 information exposure, with the scope change and high confidentiality impact reflecting that the leaked credential grants access to, and potential tampering with, the source registry's images. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, but the flaw is a credible credential-theft primitive for any tenant or operator account that has been granted registry management rights. A vendor fix is available in the 2.5.0 release.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Arcane 2.5.0 (release tag backend/v2.5.0), which adds the shared validation.ValidateCredentialTargetChange check that rejects a registry URL host change whenever a stored token would be carried over - the update must fail with a validation error on the "token" field unless a replacement token is supplied. After upgrading, rotate every container-registry PAT or password that was configured on a generic registry entry, since any credential that may have been exposed through a prior URL repoint should be considered compromised, and revoke the old tokens at the registry provider; review Arcane audit/activity records for registries:update or registries:test actions that changed a registry URL. Where immediate patching is not possible, the effective compensating control is least-privilege on the two required permissions: strip registries:update and registries:test from every non-administrative role and limit them to a small set of trusted operators, accepting the operational trade-off that legitimate registry maintenance then requires elevation. Note that this is only a partial mitigation because the flaw is exploitable by any account that legitimately holds those permissions, it does not prevent an insider or compromised operator account from performing the repoint, and it does nothing for already-stored credentials - so token rotation at the provider remains necessary. ECR-type registries are not affected by this path, so no remediation is required for those entries. Technical ContextAI · show details

Arcane is a Go-based management interface for Docker containers, images, networks and volumes, and it persists container-registry connection details - URL, username and an encrypted token - in its database. In the vulnerable code path (backend/api/services/container_registry_service.go in the advisory's layout; backend/internal/services/container_registry_service.go in the patched tree), the UpdateRegistry handler calls applyRegistryTypeUpdateInternal and then preserves the stored token when the request omits or empties the token field, while normalizeRegistryServerAddressInternal performs no validation that the new destination host is related to the previous one. TestRegistry therefore decrypts the previously stored secret via crypto.Decrypt and RegistryLogin transmits it to whatever host the URL now names. This is a classic CWE-200 exposure-of-sensitive-information-through-sent-credentials pattern: the credential is bound to a logical registry identity in the UI but not cryptographically or logically bound to the destination host in the login flow. The fix in PR 3317 introduces a shared helper, validation.ValidateCredentialTargetChange, which compares the old and new targets after normalization and rejects the update with a ValidationError on the "token" field when a stored secret would be reused against a different host; the same helper is refactored into the git repository service, which previously had its own validateGitRepositoryCredentialChangeInternal for sshKey and token. Only generic registries are affected - ECR-type registries are explicitly excluded from the check, and path-only changes on the same host remain permitted (for example https://registry.example.com/one to REGISTRY.EXAMPLE.COM/two keeps the stored token), confirming the vulnerability is specifically about host redirection. The CPE entry cpe:2.3:a:getarcaneapp:arcane:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* with a wildcard version indicates that every release before the fix is presumed affected.

DescriptionCVE.org

Arcane is an interface for managing Docker containers, images, networks, and volumes. Prior to 2.5.0, UpdateRegistry and TestRegistry in backend/api/services/container_registry_service.go allow the registry URL to change while preserving the stored encrypted token. When a holder of registries:update and registries:test repoints a generic registry URL without supplying a replacement token, TestRegistry decrypts the preserved token and RegistryLogin sends it to the attacker-controlled host because normalizeRegistryServerAddressInternal does not restrict the destination. This exposes the stored container-registry PAT or password and can enable image access or tampering. This issue is fixed in version 2.5.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Arcane versions prior to 2.5.0 expose stored container-registry credentials to an attacker-controlled host when an authenticated user with both registries:update and registries:test permissions repoints a generic registry entry. This credential exposure can allow unauthorized access to and tampering with container images, potentially impacting software supply-chain integrity for teams relying on those registries. Leadership should prioritize remediation because affected registry credentials can be used to alter or steal production images, even though no public exploit or active exploitation has been identified.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch (2.5.0) if available; otherwise restrict registries:update and registries:test permissions, rotate stored registry credentials, audit registry entries for unexpected URL changes, and monitor RegistryLogin/TestRegistry activity.
