1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that a victim host PULL or IMPORT an attacker-controlled image layer containing certain opaque whiteout configurations (interleaved files plus repeated .wh..wh..opq markers) processed by containerd's layer unpack handler in pkg/archive/tar.go. It is therefore gated by operator/pipeline action (UI:A) and a local vector (AV:L) - the attacker cannot trigger it remotely without the victim choosing to fetch the image. Limiting factors: only availability is affected (transient CPU consumption and slower/less concurrent image pulls, no code execution or data exposure); environments restricted to trusted, signed images from controlled registries are effectively not exposed; and affected deployments are those running containerd prior to 1.7.35, 2.0.12, 2.2.8, or 2.3.5. |
| Impact | This is a genuine-but-low-priority denial-of-service issue (CVSS 4.0 base 4.6, Medium), not a high-severity emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L) tells a consistent story: the only impact is limited availability (VA:L) with no confidentiality or integrity effect, and crucially the vector is LOCAL with required user/operator interaction (UI:A) - the malicious layer only does damage when something on the host pulls or imports the crafted image. This is CWE-400 resource exhaustion (redundant directory walks during opaque-whiteout processing), so the realistic worst case is wasted CPU, delayed container startup, and reduced image-pull concurrency, not compromise. No EPSS score was supplied, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and no public exploit was provided (the GitHub 'source code evidence' is the upstream FIX commit plus a benchmark/regression test, which is remediation code, not weaponized PoC). Signals are therefore aligned and unalarming: no active-exploitation signal, no privilege escalation, no data impact. The main reason to patch promptly is that containerd is ubiquitous and the fix is trivial to adopt, so the effort/risk tradeoff favors updating even though real-world danger is modest. One caveat to verify: UI:A/AV:L assumes an operator (or automated pipeline) pulls an untrusted image - environments that only run vetted, signed images from trusted registries face negligible exposure. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker publishes a container image to a registry (or supplies it to a build/CI pipeline) whose layer contains many files interleaved with repeated opaque whiteout markers (.wh..wh..opq). When an operator or automated system on the victim host pulls or imports that image, containerd's layer-unpack handler performs redundant, repeated directory traversals, burning CPU and delaying container startup and concurrent pulls for unrelated workloads. No public exploit code was provided, though the upstream fix commit and its benchmark illustrate the triggering tar structure. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Repeated directory traversal during image-layer unpacking in containerd allows a malicious container image to consume excessive CPU by interleaving ordinary files with opaque whiteout markers, delaying container startup and reducing image-pull concurrency for unrelated deployments. Affected versions are containerd prior to 1.7.35, 2.0.12, 2.2.8, and 2.3.5; exploitation requires an operator, orchestrator, or CI/CD pipeline to pull or import the attacker-controlled image (CVSS 4.0 base 4.6, Medium; independent assessment CVSS 3.1 AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L), so environments restricted to trusted, signed images from controlled registries are effectively not exposed. Only availability is affected - there is no code execution or data exposure - and no public exploit code had been identified at the time of analysis; this is a genuine but low-priority denial-of-service issue rather than a high-severity emergency.
RemediationAI
Upgrade containerd to the fixed release for your branch: 1.7.35, 2.0.12, 2.2.8, or 2.3.5 (vendor-released patch; details in GHSA-rp3h-jf77-q9p4 at https://github.com/containerd/containerd/security/advisories/GHSA-rp3h-jf77-q9p4, fix commit e6ca378dcfa610d06589a3ac96aa992de866e4f0), then restart the containerd daemon to load the new binary. Distributions and Kubernetes vendors that bundle containerd should be updated via their own package/advisory channels. If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls include restricting image sources to trusted, signed registries with content-trust/Notary verification and admission policies, since the attack requires an operator or pipeline to pull the malicious layer - the trade-off is that image-pull flexibility and third-party base images are constrained, and signature verification adds latency; and limiting per-node image-pull concurrency or imposing pull timeouts on untrusted workloads, which reduces the blast radius of a CPU-exhausting layer at the cost of slower bulk pulls. Because only availability is impacted, no data-integrity or containment controls are required.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw resides in containerd's naive layer-unpack handler in pkg/archive/tar.go (applyNaive), which processes OCI/Docker image layers by applying tar streams to a root filesystem. Opaque whiteouts (the .wh..wh..opq marker documented in the OCI image spec and used by OverlayFS/AUFS to signal that all entries from lower layers in a directory must be hidden) are handled by walking the target directory tree and removing prior content. In vulnerable builds, the handler did not memoize which directories had already been processed for an opaque marker, so a layer that alternates regular files and opaque whiteout entries causes the same directory subtree to be re-traversed repeatedly - an algorithmic-complexity / uncontrolled-resource-consumption condition (CWE-400). The upstream fix (commit e6ca378dcfa610d06589a3ac96aa992de866e4f0) introduces an opaqueDirs map[string]struct{} to record directories that already processed an opaque marker, short-circuits repeat processing, and uses filepath.WalkDir with filepath.SkipDir to avoid descending into directories during whiteout application. Regression and benchmark tests (WhiteoutOpaque, WhiteoutOpaqueOutOfOrder, TestRepeatedOpaqueWhiteout, BenchmarkRepeatedOpaqueWhiteout) were added to tar_test.go. Because unpack runs inside the containerd daemon during image pull/import, the cost is borne by the host runtime rather than the attacker, but whiteout ordering semantics are preserved, so the fix does not change resulting filesystem contents.

containerd is an open-source container runtime. Prior to 1.7.35, 2.0.12, 2.2.8, and 2.3.5, containerd's layer unpack handler repeatedly traverses directories for certain opaque whiteout configurations. A malicious image layer can trigger repeated directory traversals while opaque whiteouts are processed. Pulling or importing the image can consume CPU, delay container startup, and reduce image-pull concurrency for unrelated deployments. This issue is fixed in versions 1.7.35, 2.0.12, 2.2.8, and 2.3.5.
