Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Requires local access to an Intel irdma RDMA device node with sufficient rights to use RDMA verbs (create QP/CQ/SRQ objects and register/deregister memory regions). Exploitation is performed by deregistering an MR that is still associated with a live QP/CQ/SRQ ring; the host must run an affected Linux kernel (irdma driver, roughly 5.14 up to the fixed 6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc1 lines) with Intel E800/X722-class RDMA hardware or its emulation in use. Limiting factors: local-only vector (AV:L), no network reachability, and the need for a configured/usable RDMA device - hosts without irdma exposed to untrusted local users are not affected.

Impact

The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N, C:H/I:H/A:H, base 7.8) frames this as a locally-triggered, low-privilege flaw with high impact. The technical detail supports a genuine use-after-free: userspace could deregister a memory region (MR) still backing a live QP/CQ/SRQ ring because the MR carried no refcount for that association, leaving the kernel using freed/unmapped ring memory. Unlike the many RDMA error-path/probe-path siblings that are only reachable on failure unwinds, this one is directly attacker-driven through normal userspace verbs (ibv_dereg_mr), which makes it a real UAF primitive rather than a theoretical crash. That said, the C:H/I:H/A:H triad looks inflated for a bounded ring-memory UAF gated behind local RDMA-verbs access; realistic impact is dominated by crash/corruption (A:H) with only limited, non-deterministic confidentiality/integrity exposure. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV entry, and no public exploit are present in the input - no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Net: a legitimate local privilege/DoS concern for hosts exposing Intel irdma to untrusted local users, but not a widespread-exploitation priority. Realistic severity is closer to ~5.5-6.5 than 7.8.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local user with access to the Intel irdma RDMA device creates a QP/CQ/SRQ, registers a memory region to back its ring, then deregisters that MR while the ring is still active. The kernel continues to use the now-freed ring memory, yielding a use-after-free that can crash the host or be groomed toward memory corruption and local privilege escalation. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026

Use-after-free in the Intel irdma RDMA driver in the Linux kernel allows a local user who can issue RDMA verbs against an irdma device to deregister a memory region that is still backing a live queue-pair, completion-queue or shared-receive-queue ring, because the driver never takes an additional reference on those userspace ring MRs before associating them with the ring objects. Affected systems run a kernel with the irdma driver (present since roughly 5.14) up to the fixed releases 6.18.52, 7.2.6 and 7.3-rc1, and must expose an Intel E800/X722-class RDMA device node to the untrusted local user. Exploitation requires local access with RDMA verbs privileges (CVSS vector PR:L, AV:L), is not reachable over the network, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis; the issue is not listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: Linux 6.18.52, 7.2.6 and 7.3-rc1 (upstream commits f67d8a08f60c9217df6d40da56422d2049f5e334, 07974c267f603a76aead348bca97deee95efdcc9 and a6c0e693a7c881bfa43ac74cbcad1f8e10f1382b); apply the kernel update from your distribution or cherry-pick the corresponding stable commit, since the fix is small and backportable. Because exploitation requires local RDMA verbs access, the most effective compensating control where an immediate kernel update is not possible is to stop untrusted local users from reaching the device: restrict ownership and permissions on /dev/infiniband/uverbs* and the associated rdma_cm nodes so only the RDMA service accounts can open them, and remove those users from groups granted uverbs access - the trade-off is that any legitimate local RDMA consumer loses its verbs interface. If RDMA is not needed on the host at all, blacklisting or unloading the irdma module (modprobe.blacklist=irdma, or disabling it in the initramfs) removes the attack surface entirely, at the cost of losing all Intel RDMA functionality. Note that there is no configuration switch that disables only MR deregistration while keeping RDMA usable, so partial mitigations should be treated as containment rather than a fix; after patching, existing userspace RDMA applications continue to work unchanged since the fix only adds a reference at MR association time.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw sits in the irdma driver, Intel's RDMA/iWARP provider for E800-series and related Ethernet controllers, which plugs into the kernel's RDMA subsystem and the uverbs userspace interface. Userspace registers memory regions (MRs) through uverbs and then uses them to back the rings of queue pairs, completion queues and shared receive queues; the driver is expected to keep a reference on any MR that a hardware ring points at so that the MR cannot be torn down while DMA is still in flight. CVE-2026-93154 fixes the missing reference counting on those user ring MRs by bumping the MR refcount at association time, which is the classic improper reference-count (CWE-911) pattern that produces a use-after-free (CWE-416) when the object is freed and later dereferenced by the ring. No CWE was supplied in the source data; the root-cause class above is inferred from the fix described in the upstream commits. Under our independent assessment the realistic outcome is a kernel use-after-free reachable only by a local user holding a usable irdma device node, with limited confidentiality/integrity exposure (C:L/I:L) but serious availability impact (A:H) - somewhat more conservative than the vendor's C:H/I:H/A:H rating, which assumes a fully controlled memory-corruption primitive. The relevant upstream fixes are commits f67d8a08f60c9217df6d40da56422d2049f5e334, 07974c267f603a76aead348bca97deee95efdcc9 and a6c0e693a7c881bfa43ac74cbcad1f8e10f1382b, all branching from b48c24c2d710cf34810c555dcef883a3d35a9c08.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

RDMA/irdma: Add refcounting to user ring MRs

Prevent userspace from deregistering the MRs that back QP/CQ/SRQ rings by bumping the MR's refcount upon association.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

The Intel irdma RDMA driver in the Linux kernel contains a high-severity use-after-free (CVE-2026-93154) that a local authenticated user with RDMA verbs privileges can trigger, potentially causing kernel memory corruption or host instability. This affects systems running affected kernels with Intel E800/X722-class RDMA devices exposed to untrusted local users, such as shared or multi-tenant environments where host reliability is critical. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV, but unpatched systems below fixed releases 6.18.52, 7.2.6, or 7.3-rc1 should be remediated promptly to protect shared infrastructure.
