Remote unauthenticated attacker sends ordinary JSON to trigger quadratic CPU exhaustion (A:H) with no confidentiality/integrity impact; feature-gating is a deployment precondition, not attack complexity.

Forward-reference completion for @JsonIdentityInfo object IDs in FasterXML jackson-databind performs a linear scan of the pending-reference accumulator for every resolved ID. The affected paths are CollectionDeserializer.CollectionReferringAccumulator.resolveForwardReference() and the equivalent implementation in MapDeserializer. When a document first creates N unresolved object-ID references in an identity-enabled collection or map and then defines those same IDs in reverse order, completion performs on the order of N * (N + 1) / 2 identity comparisons, so a shallow document whose size grows linearly causes quadratic CPU work during deserialization. The reporter instrumented equals() calls on the ID class and measured exactly 2,003,000 comparisons at N = 2,000, against zero comparisons in the pending-reference lookup path for an equally sized control in which every reference was already resolved. The input requires no deep nesting and no syntactically unusual JSON. Exploitation requires an application that deserializes attacker-influenced JSON into an identity-enabled collection or map. The fix replaces the repeated linear lookup with a keyed pending-reference structure.

AnalysisAI
Denial of service in FasterXML jackson-databind allows unauthenticated remote attackers to exhaust CPU resources by submitting crafted JSON that triggers quadratic complexity in forward-reference resolution for @JsonIdentityInfo object IDs. The attack requires the application to deserialize attacker-influenced JSON into a collection or map configured with @JsonIdentityInfo; a shallow document with N forward references defined in reverse order causes O(N^2) identity comparisons during deserialization. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires an application that deserializes attacker-influenced JSON into a collection or map configured with @JsonIdentityInfo (identity/object-ID resolution enabled) - this is the specific, non-default feature that activates the vulnerable CollectionReferringAccumulator.resolveForwardReference() / MapDeserializer forward-reference path. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine but conditional availability risk, not a headline emergency. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to a patched version of jackson-databind as directed by the vendor advisory (GHSA-cxp5-3px4-pw24); the fix replaces the linear pending-reference scan with a keyed structure and is tracked in GitHub issue 6204. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all Java services and embedded dependencies that include jackson-databind, prioritizing internet-facing APIs and any product that deserializes untrusted JSON, and confirm whether @JsonIdentityInfo or equivalent object-identity handling is enabled on collections or maps; where those services cannot be patched immediately, apply input size and payload-depth limits and rate limiting at the API gateway or WAF. …
