Exploitation Conditions

The target site must have at least one Everest Forms form embedded and reachable; no authentication is required (PR:N), because the submission nonce is publicly rendered in every embedded form and can additionally be minted anonymously through the nopriv everest_forms_get_form_update_nonce action. The attacker supplies a hidden form field whose submitted value contains a smart tag such as {post_meta key="..."}; in versions ≤3.6.2 this request-body value is passed through everest_forms_process_smart_tags in class-evf-form-task.php (do_task/entry_save), causing resolution against arbitrary WordPress post meta on any post type. Exploitation requires that the targeted secrets are actually stored in post meta, and the practical limiting factor is the output channel: the resolved value lands in a form notification email or a stored entry, so the attacker must be able to observe or control that destination to complete exfiltration - a detail not specified in the available sources. The patched behavior resolves smart tags strictly from the field's admin-configured default_value, so a crafted request body can no longer inject the tag.

Impact

This is a fully unauthenticated, network, low-complexity flaw (CVSS:3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) in a popular WordPress form plugin, which normally argues for elevated priority. However, the confidentiality impact is rated only Low (C:L) with no integrity or availability impact, producing a medium 5.3 base score. There is clear tension between the C:L rating and the description's claim that highly sensitive post meta - license keys, API tokens, SMTP credentials, Stripe/AWS secrets - can be extracted; the most likely reason for C:L rather than C:H is that the resolved secrets surface in form notification emails or stored entries, so the attacker's ability to actually receive the data depends on whether they can observe or control that output channel, which the sources do not fully describe. No EPSS score is provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be weighed. The CVE is not in CISA KEV and no confirmed public exploit code is present (the references are vendor advisory, source-code lines and the patch PR, not weaponized exploit code), so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', consistent with a real but non-emergency priority: trivial exploitability and sensitive data at stake justify prompt patching, but there is no active-exploitation or high-EPSS signal that would make it an emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker locates any embedded Everest Forms form and obtains a valid submission nonce - either the one publicly rendered in the form markup or one freshly minted anonymously via the nopriv everest_forms_get_form_update_nonce AJAX action - then submits the form with a hidden field value containing a crafted smart tag such as {post_meta key="..."}. In versions up to and including 3.6.2 the plugin processes that attacker-submitted value as a smart tag and resolves it against arbitrary WordPress post meta, placing the retrieved secret into the notification email or stored entry. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, though the trigger and fix are documented in vendor PR #1669.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 29, 2026

Unauthenticated attackers can extract arbitrary WordPress post meta values - including license keys, API tokens, SMTP credentials, and Stripe or AWS secrets stored on any post type - from WordPress sites running the Everest Forms plugin through version 3.6.2. The submission nonce is rendered publicly in every embedded form and can also be minted anonymously via the nopriv everest_forms_get_form_update_nonce action, so a crafted form submission containing a smart tag such as {post_meta key="..."} is resolved by the plugin instead of being treated as inert user input; the resolved value then surfaces in a form notification email or a stored entry. Rated CVSS 5.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, confidentiality-only), no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and it is not in CISA KEV, but the practical barrier is low wherever the exfiltration destination can be observed; the priority label is this_month.

RemediationAI

Patch status: upstream fix available as a pull request/commit (https://github.com/themegrill/everest-forms/pull/1669/changes, trunk changeset https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3747723/everest-forms/trunk/includes/class-evf-form-task.php); a released patched plugin version is not independently confirmed, so check the plugin directory and the Wordfence advisory for the first fixed version and update to it as soon as it is published. The fix works by resolving smart tags only from each field's admin-configured default_value rather than from the submitted request body, so any deployment relying on the old behavior for dynamically populated hidden fields will need its forms reconfigured. Until a patched version is installed, the actionable compensating control is to remove or unpublish embedded Everest Forms forms on publicly reachable pages, since the submission nonce is handed out in the form markup and can also be minted anonymously through the nopriv everest_forms_get_form_update_nonce action - the trade-off is loss of the form's functionality wherever it is withdrawn. Because exploitation depends on secrets residing in WordPress post meta and on an observable output channel (notification email or stored entry), reducing the secrets kept in post meta and restricting who can receive or view form notifications lowers impact, but neither measure removes the vulnerable resolution path itself and updating remains the complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Everest Forms is a WordPress form builder (CPE cpe:2.3:a:wpeverest:everest_forms_-_contact_form,_payment_form,_quiz,_survey_&_custom_form_builder_with_ai) whose 'smart tags' feature substitutes placeholders like {field_id=...} in notification and entry content at render time. Root cause class is CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor): in versions ≤3.6.2 the do_task() and entry_save() paths in includes/class-evf-form-task.php took the *submitted* value of a hidden field and, if it contained a brace, passed it through the everest_forms_process_smart_tags filter (with the companion class-evf-smart-tags.php processing the tag lists). That allowed attacker-supplied smart tags to be resolved against the WordPress database, reaching arbitrary post meta via the post_meta smart tag. Access control is absent by design here: the form nonce is embedded in the public page markup and a nopriv AJAX handler (everest_forms_get_form_update_nonce) will issue one to anonymous callers, so the usual nonce gate provides no protection. The upstream fix in PR #1669 (and trunk changeset 3747723) rewrites both paths to resolve smart tags strictly from the field's admin-configured default_value taken from the trusted form definition, so a crafted request body can no longer inject a tag; it also restructures the field smart-tag handling in class-evf-smart-tags.php. Exfiltration is bounded by reality: the target site must host at least one reachable embedded form, the sought secrets must actually live in post meta, and the resolved value lands in a notification email or stored entry, so the attacker must be able to reach that output channel - the sources do not state how that final step is achieved.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Everest Forms - Contact Form, Payment Form, Quiz, Survey & Custom Form Builder with AI plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Sensitive Information Exposure in all versions up to, and including, 3.6.2 via the process. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to extract arbitrary WordPress post meta values - including license keys, API tokens, SMTP credentials, and Stripe or AWS secrets stored on any post type - via form submission notification emails or stored entries. The submission nonce is publicly rendered in every embedded form and can additionally be minted anonymously via the nopriv everest_forms_get_form_update_nonce action, meaning no account or prior authentication of any kind is required to complete the exploit.
