| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the specific misconfigured open-vsx.org edge/CDN deployment that reflected the requesting Origin header while also emitting Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true on the authenticated /user/ endpoints - this is NOT reproducible in any self-hosted Open VSX install, since the software only sets allowCredentials(true) against a single exact origin derived from ovsx.webui.url and defines no origin-reflection behavior. The limiting factors are: (1) the victim must be actively logged in to open-vsx.org with a valid session cookie, and (2) the victim must visit an attacker-controlled web page (UI:P/UI:R) while that session is active; no attacker authentication is needed. Because the fix is operational at the hosted edge layer, exposure is bounded to the window before Eclipse corrected the CDN headers rather than to any installable version range. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue where the CVSS 4.0 score of 8.7 is well-justified by the vector CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H - network-reachable, low attack complexity, no attacker authentication required (the victim's own logged-in session is abused), and only passive user interaction (visiting a malicious page). All three impact metrics are High because the CORS-with-credentials misconfiguration lets any origin read authenticated /user/ responses AND, by reading the same-origin-protected /user/csrf token, defeat CSRF protection to forge write requests that mint a personal access token with publish and delete rights over the victim's namespaces. Signals do not conflict: the description's technical detail matches the vector precisely (PR:N is correct - the attacker needs no credentials because it rides the victim's cookies; UI:P/UI:R is correct because the victim must visit an attacker-controlled page). No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC is provided, so there is no evidence of active exploitation - the risk is driven by the low bar to weaponize a well-understood, deterministic web flaw rather than by observed in-the-wild activity. One nuance worth verifying: the flaw was in the CDN/edge configuration of the single open-vsx.org deployment, not in the Open VSX application software itself, so remediation is operational (edge header configuration) and likely already applied server-side rather than distributed as a code patch. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker lures a logged-in Open VSX user to a malicious web page, which uses the victim's browser to issue credentialed cross-origin requests to open-vsx.org; because the edge reflects the Origin with Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true, the page reads /user, /user/tokens, and the /user/csrf token. It then chains the leaked CSRF token to POST /user/token/create and exfiltrates a personal access token carrying publish and delete rights over the victim's namespaces. No public exploit or POC is identified at time of analysis, but the technique is a deterministic, low-complexity CORS-plus-CSRF chain requiring only that the victim visit a page while authenticated. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026
Credentialed cross-origin reads and namespace takeover were possible against the hosted open-vsx.org registry because its CDN/edge layer reflected the requesting Origin back in Access-Control-Allow-Origin while simultaneously emitting Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true on authenticated /user/ endpoints. A page on any origin could then issue credentialed requests in a logged-in user's browser and read the responses, exposing /user (login name, avatar, homepage, tokens URL), /user/tokens, /user/namespaces, /user/extensions, /user/search/{name}, /user/namespace/{name}/members and - critically - /user/csrf; with the CSRF token readable, the write-endpoint protection collapsed, and chaining /user/csrf with /user/token/create let the attacker page mint and exfiltrate a personal access token carrying publish and delete rights over the victim's namespaces. Attackers need no authentication of their own (CVSS 4.0 PR:N) and only passive victim interaction - the victim must be logged in to open-vsx.org and visit the attacker's page - while no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Remediation is operational rather than version-based: Eclipse corrected the CDN/edge response headers so that Access-Control-Allow-Origin no longer reflects arbitrary requesting origins and is never paired with Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true on the /user/ endpoints. Administrators of self-hosted Open VSX instances do not need to upgrade any CVE-specific release, but should verify that their own edge or reverse proxy does not inject reflective CORS headers in front of the registry, that allowCredentials remains limited to the exact origin configured via ovsx.webui.url, and that /user, /user/csrf and /user/tokens are not cached or served with permissive cross-origin policies. Where independent review of the fix is required, confirm with a crafted Origin header that responses to the /user/ endpoints contain either no Access-Control-Allow-Origin or a fixed allow-listed value, and that the credential header is absent whenever the origin is echoed; the Eclipse advisory trail is at https://gitlab.eclipse.org/security/cve-assignment/-/work_items/289. As defense in depth independent of the edge fix, session and CSRF cookies for open-vsx.org can be issued with SameSite=Lax or Strict, which prevents them from being attached to cross-site credentialed fetches at the cost of breaking legitimate cross-site embedding or integrations, and users should treat any personal access token minted during the exposure window as compromised and rotate it, since such tokens carry publish and delete rights over their namespaces.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-942, Permissive Cross-domain Security Policy with Untrusted Domains, realized at the infrastructure layer rather than in Open VSX source code. Correct CORS credential handling requires that Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true never be combined with a dynamically reflected or wildcarded Access-Control-Allow-Origin, because browsers will then send the victim's cookies to the endpoint and expose the response body to the requesting script. Here the edge/CDN reflected the incoming Origin on the authenticated /user/ endpoints of open-vsx.org, turning an ordinary session cookie into a cross-site data-exfiltration primitive. The impact is amplified by the application's own design: /user/csrf is intended to be read by the legitimate web UI to obtain a CSRF token for state-changing calls, so once that endpoint was readable cross-origin, the CSRF defense on write endpoints (including /user/token/create) was effectively void. It is important to note that the Open VSX software itself is not the defect - it calls allowCredentials(true) in exactly one place against a single exact origin derived from the ovsx.webui.url configuration property and defines no CORS mapping on /user/ beyond that, so no configuration of the software produces origin reflection with credentials. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:eclipse_foundation:open-vsx.org:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* therefore denotes the hosted service endpoint, and the true attack surface is the Eclipse-operated edge deployment, meaning the exploitable window is bounded by the correction of the CDN headers rather than by any installable version range.

DescriptionCVE.org
The open-vsx.org deployment returned Access-Control-Allow-Origin reflecting the requesting origin together with Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true on the authenticated /user/ endpoints. A page on any origin could therefore issue credentialed requests to the service in a logged-in user's browser and read the responses.
This exposed /user (login name, avatar, homepage, tokens URL), /user/tokens, /user/namespaces, /user/extensions, /user/search/{name} and /user/namespace/{name}/members, and - because /user/csrf was readable the same way - allowed the CSRF protection on write endpoints to be defeated. Chaining the two, an attacker page could call /user/token/create and exfiltrate a personal access token carrying publish and delete rights over the victim's namespaces.
The headers were emitted by the CDN/edge layer, not by the application: the Open VSX software sets allowCredentials(true) in exactly one place, against a single exact origin derived from ovsx.webui.url, and defines no CORS mapping on /user/ beyond it. No configuration of the software produces origin reflection with credentials.
Executive ViewAI
Open VSX (open-vsx.org), the vendor-neutral extension registry used by VS Code-compatible editors, carries an unpatched high-severity cross-origin flaw (CVE-2026-90882, CVSS 8.7) that allows any web page to read a logged-in publisher's account data and mint a personal access token carrying publish and delete rights over that publisher's namespaces. The attacker requires no credentials of their own and the victim only needs to be logged in to open-vsx.org, so the realistic worst case is a hijacked publisher namespace used to distribute malicious extension updates to downstream developers - a software supply-chain exposure affecting every consumer of those extensions, not just the publisher. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, so the organization is currently dependent on interim containment and token hygiene.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: revoke and reissue all Open VSX personal access tokens and remove standing delete/publish rights from routine tokens; enforce browser policy that blocks credentialed cross-origin requests and third-party site data to open-vsx.org; restrict authenticated registry sessions and publishing to isolated browser profiles on managed devices; require MFA on publisher identities; monitor extension publishes, token creation and namespace membership changes for anomalies; and, where feasible, source or mirror required extensions from an internal registry instead of the public open-vsx.org endpoint.
