Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a specific combination: (1) the site must run a webserver that does not enforce .htaccess access rules - explicitly NGINX - so the plugin's directory-level restriction is bypassed, and (2) a backup restore operation must have been interrupted, leaving a complete backup archive in the plugin's working directory. On Apache or other servers honouring .htaccess, access is blocked, and if no interrupted restore has occurred there is no archive to retrieve. These environmental and timing dependencies (reflected in AC:H) significantly limit real-world exploitability despite the unauthenticated network vector; no user interaction or authentication is needed once the conditions hold.

Impact

This is a genuine but conditional information-disclosure flaw, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N, C:H/I:N/A:N) correctly reflects a high-confidentiality impact reachable remotely by unauthenticated attackers, but with high attack complexity because exploitation depends on two conditions outside the attacker's control: the webserver must not honour .htaccess (e.g. NGINX), and a backup restore must have been interrupted, leaving the full archive in the working directory. The 5.9 (Medium) base score is consistent with that trade-off between broad reachability and dependency on a transient, environment-specific state. No EPSS score was supplied, the CVE is not on CISA KEV, and no POC was indicated, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The impact if successful is severe (database dump, site files, credentials, and secret keys), making this a prioritize-if-you-run-NGINX issue rather than a universal drop-everything patch. Missing signals: EPSS, POC status, and any exploitation telemetry are absent and should be treated as unknown rather than low.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who knows a WordPress site runs BackWPup behind NGINX periodically requests the plugin's backup working-directory path. If an administrator's restore operation was interrupted and left a backup archive behind, the attacker downloads it directly over HTTP without authentication, obtaining the database dump, site files, credentials, and secret keys. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the attack requires only crafted HTTP GET requests.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026

Information disclosure in the BackWPup WordPress plugin before 5.7.7 lets unauthenticated remote attackers download a complete backup archive - database dump, site files, credentials and secret keys - left behind in the plugin's working directory by an interrupted restore. Exploitation is conditional: it requires the site to run a webserver that does not enforce .htaccess restrictions (explicitly NGINX) plus an interrupted restore that left the archive in place, which is why the assessed vector carries AC:H despite PR:N, AV:N. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the issue is not confirmed as actively exploited (CISA KEV), so this rates as a genuine but conditional information-disclosure flaw rather than an emergency, though the high confidentiality impact of leaked database and secret-key material warrants prompt patching.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade BackWPup to 5.7.7 or later - this is the only complete fix and should be applied to every WordPress instance running an affected version, referencing https://wpscan.com/vulnerability/ee9f0772-ac6f-4e2d-a2c0-cc8892291932/ and CVE-2026-86826. Until the upgrade can be staged, and as defence in depth afterwards on NGINX, add an explicit server-level deny for the plugin's working directory (for example a location block matching the BackWPup working path that returns 403 or denies all) - this is the compensating control that replaces the .htaccess rule NGINX ignores, and its side effect is that in-progress restores referencing that path over HTTP may break, so it should be paired with completing or cancelling pending restores. Immediately hunt for and delete any orphaned backup archives left in the plugin working directory by interrupted restores, since with no archive present the flaw is not exploitable; treat any such archive as already potentially disclosed. If a credential-bearing archive is found, rotate the WordPress database credentials, WordPress salts/security keys, and any administrator or application passwords captured in the dump, and review webserver and plugin logs for unauthenticated GET requests to the working directory path. Generic 'defence in depth' advice is not a substitute for the version upgrade, because additional leftover archives can accumulate at any time a restore fails.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Root cause is CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor). BackWPup performs backup and restore operations through a working directory inside the plugin's own path, and it relies on directory-level access restrictions - the classic Apache .htaccess mechanism - rather than application-level authorization checks to protect interim files. NGINX does not read or honour .htaccess files at all, so on NGINX-hosted WordPress sites the plugin's working directory is directly web-reachable and any file placed there is downloadable by anyone who can guess or enumerate the path. During a restore, BackWPup writes a full backup archive (SQL database dump plus site files) into that directory; if the restore is interrupted, the archive remains on disk and is retrievable via a simple unauthenticated HTTP GET. The affected component class is a WordPress plugin (BackWPup, versions 0 through 5.7.7 exclusive per EUVD-2026-94747); no CPE entries were supplied with this record, so the affected package must be identified by plugin slug and version rather than by a CPE string. Because the leak exposes credentials and cryptographic secret keys, compromise can extend well beyond the immediately affected site - for example via reused admin passwords or salts used to forge authentication cookies.

DescriptionCVE.org

The BackWPup WordPress plugin before 5.7.7 does not properly restrict web access to the working directory it uses during backup restores, allowing unauthenticated attackers, on webservers that do not honour .htaccess rules such as NGINX, to download the full backup archive (database dump and site files, including credentials and secret keys) left behind by an interrupted restore.
