DescriptionCVE.org

undici's decompress interceptor decompresses response bodies according to the untrusted Content-Encoding header. While the number of content-encoding layers is capped, the total decompressed output size is unbounded and there is no configuration option to limit it. A malicious or faulty upstream can therefore return a small compressed payload, a compression bomb, that expands to hundreds of megabytes or more in client memory, an asymmetric resource consumption that can exhaust memory and crash the process. This affects undici versions from 7.15.0 up to 7.29.1 and from 8.0.0 up to 8.10.2. Users should upgrade to undici 7.29.1 or 8.10.2.

AnalysisAI

Memory exhaustion via compression bomb in undici's decompress interceptor (versions 7.15.0-<7.29.1 and 8.0.0-<8.10.2) allows a malicious or compromised upstream HTTP server to crash a Node.js process by returning a small compressed payload that expands to hundreds of megabytes in client heap memory. The interceptor respects the untrusted Content-Encoding header and enforces no ceiling on total decompressed output size, making the attack purely asymmetric - a kilobyte-scale upstream payload can trigger unbounded client-side allocation. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The decompress interceptor must be in use, which requires undici version 7.15.0 or later (the feature was introduced in that release). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The provided CVSS 5.9 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) is well-calibrated: the availability impact is High, but AC:H correctly acknowledges that a malicious or compromised upstream server is a prerequisite - the attacker must be positioned to control or intercept what the undici client connects to, which limits opportunistic mass exploitation. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade undici to version 7.29.1 (7.x branch) or 8.10.2 (8.x branch), the fixed releases confirmed by the OpenJS Foundation advisory GHSA-3xpg-4rpp-hhhm at https://github.com/nodejs/undici/security/advisories/GHSA-3xpg-4rpp-hhhm. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
