MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Discovery, Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires PHYSICAL access to the target iPhone/iPad AND an existing trust pairing with that device (a previously accepted 'Trust This Computer'/accessory relationship). The path traversal is triggered over that trusted connection to read and write files outside the sanctioned path. Limiting factors: the attacker must physically possess the device, the device must already be trust-paired (no cold/first-contact exploitation), and the target must run iOS/iPadOS earlier than 26.7 or 27. There is no remote or unauthenticated network path despite the vendor's AV:N metric. |
| Impact | The published CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, base 7.5) directly CONFLICTS with the description, which explicitly states the attacker needs 'physical access to a trust-paired device.' This is an attack vector of PHYSICAL (AV:P), not NETWORK - the 7.5 base score is therefore inflated and should be treated with skepticism; verify with vendor (Apple advisories 149034/149041). The vector also lists I:N (no integrity impact), but the description says the attacker can 'read and write arbitrary files,' so integrity impact should be HIGH - the vendor scoring is internally inconsistent on two metrics. Real-world risk is LOW-to-MODERATE despite the 7.5 label: EPSS is only 0.15% (5th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit was identified. The physical-access-plus-existing-trust-pairing precondition sharply limits practical exploitation to targeted scenarios (e.g., an unlocked/previously-paired device in an adversary's hands), not remote or scalable attacks. This is a genuine local file-access flaw worth patching but is not an urgent internet-facing priority. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with hands-on possession of an iPhone or iPad that has previously established a trust pairing (e.g., via a paired computer or accessory) connects to the device and abuses insufficient path validation to traverse outside the intended directory, reading and writing arbitrary files. No public exploit code was identified, and success requires both physical control of the device and an existing trust relationship. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 16, 2026
Path traversal in Apple iOS and iPadOS lets an attacker who physically holds a trust-paired iPhone or iPad read and write files outside the intended directory, a high-confidentiality and high-integrity impact on the device's file store. Everything running earlier than iOS/iPadOS 26.7 or iOS/iPadOS 27 is affected, and the vendor-released fixes are iOS 26.7, iPadOS 26.7, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 (Apple advisories 149034 and 149041). Exploitation hinges on prior physical possession and an already-accepted 'Trust This Computer' relationship, so the published 7.5 score (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/PR:N) is inflated relative to the required prerequisites - the same vector's PR:N confirms no additional authentication is needed once the pairing exists - and exploitation risk is further limited by a low EPSS of 0.15 percent (5th percentile) with no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: iOS 26.7, iPadOS 26.7, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 - update every affected iPhone and iPad to one of these versions via Settings > General > Software Update, and consult Apple advisories https://support.apple.com/en-us/149034 and https://support.apple.com/en-us/149041 for model-specific build numbers. Because the residual exposure is the trust relationship itself, compensating controls matter while patching is pending: audit and remove existing trusted computers and accessories by using Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy (note this also clears location and privacy permissions, and the device will re-prompt on the next connection), and disable 'Accessories' under Settings > Face ID & Passcode (USB Restricted Mode), understanding that this blocks new wired data connections while the device is locked but does not invalidate an already-approved pairing and will interrupt CarPlay, wired audio and developer tooling. On supervised fleets, use an MDM payload restricting host pairing (allow-listed pairing hosts) so only managed workstations can establish trust, at the cost of blocking legitimate user-driven backup and side-loading workflows, and treat physical custody of the device as the primary control since no remote path is described.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory, i.e. path traversal): path input reaching the file-handling code was not canonicalized/validated, so '../' style sequences escape the sanctioned directory and permit reads and writes to arbitrary filesystem locations. The affected asset, per the supplied CPE cpe:2.3:a:apple:ios_and_ipados:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, is the iOS/iPadOS operating system itself, catalogued by ENISA as EUVD-2026-78001 with affected ranges 'iOS and iPadOS 0 <26.7' and 'iOS and iPadOS 0 <27'. The vulnerable surface is the trust-paired companion/sync channel that iOS exposes to a previously approved host or accessory - the same relationship used by Finder, iTunes/Apple Devices, backup and media-transfer tooling - so the traversal is exercised over that trusted connection rather than over the network. Note the material discrepancy between the vendor-published vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, base 7.5) and the description's own prerequisite (physical access to a trust-paired device), which our assessment scores as AV:P with C:H/I:H; treating the 7.5 network metric as the operating scenario overstates exposure, since no cold, first-contact or purely remote exploitation path is described.

Lifecycle Timeline
4DescriptionCVE.org
A path traversal issue was addressed with improved path validation. This issue is fixed in iOS 26.7 and iPadOS 26.7, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. An attacker with physical access to a trust-paired device may be able to read and write arbitrary files.
Executive ViewAI
Apple iOS and iPadOS devices running versions earlier than 26.7 or 27 are affected by a file-access flaw that can expose or alter data outside intended storage boundaries, creating high confidentiality and integrity risk for mobile users who handle sensitive information. Exploitation requires physical possession of an already trust-paired device, so broad opportunistic risk is limited, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Leadership should care because iPhones and iPads are widely used for business data, and a vendor fix is available.
