MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The victim must actively mount or browse an AFP share hosted by a malicious server - either by being social-engineered into connecting to a rogue address, or by an attacker performing DNS/DHCP spoofing to redirect a legitimate AFP hostname. The AFP backend (gvfs-backends) must be installed and the gvfsd-afp daemon must be running, which requires the AFP backend package to be present on the system. The flaw is triggered on the client side, so the attacker's only prerequisite is to control an AFP server that the victim connects to. Exploitation is limited by the UI:R requirement: automated, zero-interaction attacks against passive clients are not possible - a user action (mount, browse, or file manager navigation) is necessary. There is no authentication requirement on the attacker's side since they control the server. Impact is contained to the gvfsd-afp worker process crash; the host OS and other user sessions are unaffected. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) is well-calibrated for this issue. The network vector and low complexity reflect that a malicious server reachable over any network path can trigger the flaw. User interaction is required - a user must actively mount or connect to the rogue AFP share, which meaningfully limits opportunistic exploitation. Scope is unchanged, meaning the overflow is contained to the gvfsd-afp worker process; a crash does not escalate to host-level impact. There is no confirmed CISA KEV listing and no known public exploit code, making this a low-urgency issue for most environments. The absence of confidentiality and integrity impact confirms current understanding is DoS-only, though CWE-122 heap overflows carry a theoretical potential for code execution if memory layout conditions are favorable - however, the description characterizes the outcome as a crash, and no RCE has been reported. AFP connectivity is a non-default, deliberate configuration in RHEL environments; organizations not mounting AFP shares are not exposed. EPSS data was not provided; given no KEV and no POC, real-world exploitation probability is assessed as low. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker operates a rogue AFP server on a network reachable by target users (e.g., a shared LAN, a VPN, or via DNS/DHCP poisoning to redirect legitimate AFP hostnames). A user on an RHEL system opens a file manager or runs a mount command pointing at the malicious server; the gvfsd-afp daemon connects and issues a read request. The server replies with a DSI length field larger than the client's buffer, triggering a heap overflow that crashes the gvfsd-afp process, denying the user filesystem access for that share. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 01, 2026
Heap buffer overflow in the gvfs AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) backend allows a malicious AFP server to crash the gvfsd-afp process on connecting clients, resulting in denial of service. When a client mounts an AFP share, the DSI (Data Stream Interface) read path accepts a server-supplied length value without validating it against the pre-allocated reply buffer, enabling the server to write past buffer boundaries. This affects RHEL 6 through 10 and requires user interaction to mount a malicious share; no public exploit or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Apply the gvfs package update from Red Hat once released for the applicable RHEL major version; monitor https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-84269 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2526784 for patch availability and exact fixed package versions, which are not confirmed in the current data. As an interim compensating control, prevent users from mounting AFP shares by restricting access to the gvfs-backends-afp package or disabling the AFP backend via system policy - this eliminates the attack surface entirely with no impact on workloads that do not use Apple file shares. Organizations should audit which systems have gvfsd-afp running and whether any AFP mounts are configured; environments with no AFP usage are not exposed. Network-level blocking of AFP traffic (TCP/548 and associated DSI ports) at perimeter or host firewalls can reduce exposure if package removal is not feasible, but this does not protect against malicious servers reachable over allowed network paths.

Technical ContextAI · show details
gvfs is the GNOME virtual filesystem layer that provides userspace filesystem backends for applications, including an AFP backend for mounting Apple file shares. AFP communicates over TCP using the DSI (Data Stream Interface) framing protocol, in which a length field in the DSI header describes the payload size. CWE-122 (Heap-based Buffer Overflow) applies here: the gvfsd-afp client allocates a fixed reply buffer sized to the client's own request, but when the server returns a DSI response with a larger length value, the code copies data into the undersized buffer without bounds checking. The root cause is missing server-response validation - the client trusts the server-supplied length unconditionally. The vulnerability is exercised entirely on the client side (the gvfsd-afp daemon), making the attacker's leverage the ability to operate a rogue AFP server. Affected CPE strings span cpe:2.3:a:red_hat:red_hat_enterprise_linux_6 through _10, indicating the vulnerability exists in the gvfs package as shipped across all current RHEL major versions.

DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw was found in the AFP backend in gvfs. When mounting a share, a malicious AFP server can cause the DSI read path to process a length that exceeds the size requested by the client. The function does not verify the server-provided length against the pre-sized reply buffer, causing the operation to access past the intended boundaries. This issue allows a malicious server to overflow a heap buffer and crash the gvfsd-afp process, resulting in a denial of service.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
A heap overflow occurs when a program writes data beyond the bounds of a buffer allocated in the heap memory region.
