Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a route secured with the camel-shiro ShiroSecurityProcessor/ShiroSecurityPolicy to be deployed and in use. A legitimate subject for the targeted principal must have recently authenticated and remain bound to a pooled worker thread - a state made persistent when alwaysReauthenticate=false is configured, since subjects are then deliberately long-lived on shared threads. The attacker must send a ShiroSecurityToken naming exactly that in-use principal. Limiting factors: the outcome is non-deterministic (depends on thread-pool reuse timing and an exact principal-name match), it does not trigger on every request, and deployments not using the Shiro component or that clear the subject at end of each exchange are unaffected.

Impact

This is a genuine authentication-bypass flaw (CWE-287) in the Apache Camel camel-shiro component, but the signals converge on moderate rather than critical priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N, base 5.9) correctly captures the key tension: the attacker needs no credentials (PR:N) and can reach the flaw over the network (AV:N), yet success is NOT reliable (AC:H) because it depends on two conditions outside the attacker's direct control - a pooled worker thread must still carry a subject authenticated for the same principal, and the incoming principal name must match it. No EPSS score was provided, so statistical exploitation probability cannot be weighed. The CVE is NOT listed in CISA KEV and no public exploit code was supplied (the only source-code evidence is the vendor fix diff, not a weaponized PoC), so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signals are therefore internally consistent: high confidentiality impact if hit, but low practical reliability. Realistic priority is elevated for deployments that actively use camel-shiro with long-lived thread-bound subjects (especially alwaysReauthenticate=false) and low for everyone not using the Shiro security processor at all.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker repeatedly submits Camel exchanges to a Shiro-secured route presenting a ShiroSecurityToken that names a legitimate, actively-used principal (e.g. 'ringo') but carries no valid password. If the request lands on a pooled worker thread that still has that principal's authenticated subject bound from an earlier exchange, the credential check is skipped and the attacker's request is processed as that user. No public exploit code is known; success is probabilistic and tied to thread reuse timing rather than a deterministic single request.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026

Improper credential verification in the Apache Camel camel-shiro security processor lets a remote attacker whose request names an already-in-use principal ride a thread-bound Shiro subject and skip the password check entirely. Affected are Camel 4.0.0 through 4.18.4 and 4.19.0 through 4.22.0 that secure routes with ShiroSecurityPolicy, particularly when alwaysReauthenticate=false keeps subjects long-lived on pooled worker threads; the CVSS:3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N (5.9), reflecting unauthenticated network reachability gated by high attack complexity. Because exploitation depends on thread-pool reuse timing and an exact principal-name match, it is non-deterministic rather than reliably reproducible, and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) was identified at time of analysis. Successful abuse yields access to protected routes and their data as the impersonated principal, with no integrity or availability impact assessed.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0 for the current line, 4.18.5 for the 4.18.x LTS stream, or 4.22.1 for the 4.22.x LTS stream - these are the exact fix versions published in the advisory (https://camel.apache.org/security/CVE-2026-84181.html) and delivered by PRs https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25822, /25944 and /25946. After upgrading, the processor calls Shiro login() on every exchange; note that setting alwaysReauthenticate=false retains the legacy long-lived-subject semantics for deployments that depend on them, and the 4.23.0 upgrade guide should be reviewed before changing that flag. If an immediate upgrade is impossible, clear the Shiro Subject from the worker thread at the end of every exchange (for example in an onCompletion or route-level cleanup that calls SecurityUtils.getSubject().logout()/remove()), which prevents a stale authenticated subject from being inherited by a later exchange; the trade-off is extra per-exchange work and the loss of the subject-reuse optimization. A complementary mitigation is to stop using alwaysReauthenticate=false so each exchange forces a fresh authentication - effective, but it adds realm/credential-store load proportional to message volume. Upgrading remains the only fix that guarantees the presented password is validated in all cases.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Apache Camel's camel-shiro component integrates Apache Shiro to enforce authentication and authorization on routes via ShiroSecurityPolicy and ShiroSecurityProcessor. Shiro stores the authenticated Subject in a thread-local, and Camel processes exchanges on pooled worker threads that are reused across many messages. The vulnerable applySecurityPolicy() logic short-circuited the login call whenever currentUser.isAuthenticated() was true and the incoming ShiroSecurityToken's username matched currentUser.getPrincipal() - treating 'same principal name' as 'same credentials'. With alwaysReauthenticate=false the subject is deliberately retained on the thread (rememberMe semantics), so a later exchange presenting any password for that same username never had its credential verified. This is CWE-287 (Improper Authentication): the root cause is conflating an identity assertion (username equality with a cached principal) with proof of possession of the secret. The upstream fix (apache/camel PR #25822, backported in #25944 and #25946) deletes the authenticated/sameUser short-circuit and unconditionally performs currentUser.login(new UsernamePasswordToken(user, password)) with rememberMe set from !policy.isAlwaysReauthenticate(), so Shiro's realm performs the credential check on every exchange; an accompanying regression test (ShiroAuthenticationCredentialAlwaysCheckedTest) asserts that a wrong password is rejected immediately after the same username successfully authenticated. The upgrade guide documents the behavioral change for 4.23.0.

DescriptionCVE.org

Improper Authentication vulnerability in Apache Camel Shiro component.

This issue affects Apache Camel: from 4.0.0 before 4.18.5, from 4.19.0 before 4.22.1.

The Shiro security processor skipped credential verification when the subject already bound to the current thread carried the same principal as the incoming exchange. Because the thread that carries a Camel exchange is drawn from a pool and reused across exchanges, a subject left bound by an earlier authenticated exchange could satisfy the check for a later one that presented no valid credentials of its own. The password on the incoming exchange was, in that case, never verified. The condition depends on thread reuse and on the principal matching, which is why it is not reached on every request, but it requires nothing of the attacker beyond sending a request naming a principal that is in active use.

Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, which fixes the issue. Users on the 4.18.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.18.5. Users on the 4.22.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.22.1. The processor now verifies the presented credentials on every exchange rather than accepting a subject already bound to the thread. Setting alwaysReauthenticate=false restores the previous behaviour for deployments that depend on it. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, ensure the Shiro subject is cleared from the thread at the end of every exchange so that no subject can be inherited by a later one.
