DescriptionCVE.org

A security issue in MongoDB Server allows an authenticated user with write privileges to trigger a persistent fatal assertion crash by sending specially crafted retryable write commands. The crash state is durably persisted, causing the server process to repeatedly crash on restart and potentially propagating to additional nodes in a sharded cluster. Manual intervention is required to restore service availability.

AnalysisAI

Persistent denial-of-service in MongoDB Server allows any authenticated user with write privileges to trigger a fatal assertion crash via specially crafted retryable write commands, with the crash state durably written to disk so it survives server restarts. Affected releases span MongoDB 7.0.x through 7.0.40, 8.0.x through 8.0.29, and 8.3.x through 8.3.8; in sharded clusters the corrupted state can propagate across shard nodes, requiring manual DBA intervention to restore service. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires an authenticated MongoDB session with write privileges (PR:L in the CVSS 4.0 vector). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 7.1 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) accurately characterizes the threat profile: network-reachable, low complexity, requiring only write-level authentication, with total availability impact and no confidentiality or integrity consequences. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade to MongoDB Server 7.0.41 or later for the 7.0 branch, 8.0.30 or later for the 8.0 branch, or 8.3.9 or later for the 8.3 branch, as implied by the EUVD fixed-version ranges. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all MongoDB Server instances and confirm which are running versions 7.0.x through 8.3.8; review database user access controls to identify who holds write privileges and assess the blast radius if such accounts are compromised. …
