DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw in MongoDB's JSON Schema validation error generation code allows an authenticated user with readWrite privileges to crash the mongod server. When a BSON document containing an array with a malformed numeric field name fails a $jsonSchema items type constraint, the error generation path performs unsafe numeric conversion on the user-controlled field name without proper exception handling, resulting in an uncaught exception that terminates the server process. This is possible because incoming wire protocol BSON validation does not enforce that array element field names are valid, in-range numeric indices.

AnalysisAI

Authenticated users holding readWrite privileges in MongoDB Server 7.0.x, 8.0.x, and 8.3.x can remotely crash the mongod server process by inserting a crafted BSON document. The vulnerability resides in the JSON Schema validation error generation path, which performs an unsafe numeric conversion on user-controlled BSON array field names without exception handling (CWE-248), causing an uncaught exception that terminates the server. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires an authenticated connection with the readWrite role on any database within the target MongoDB instance. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 7.1 with VA:H accurately characterizes the impact: an attacker who obtains or already holds readWrite credentials can reliably bring down the entire mongod instance, affecting all databases and tenants on that server. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation The primary remediation is to upgrade MongoDB Server to version 7.0.41, 8.0.30, or 8.3.9, selecting the branch that matches the deployed release series; these versions contain the vendor-released patch for the unsafe numeric conversion in the validation error path, per the advisory at https://jira.mongodb.org/browse/SERVER-130926. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, conduct a complete inventory of MongoDB Server deployments and identify all instances running versions 7.0.x, 8.0.x, or 8.3.x. …
