AC raised to H because overflow only triggers when nr_units > 1 in SMP/NUMA percpu-km, a non-default condition requiring specific hardware topology.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

mm/percpu-km: fix bitmap overflow and accounting in pcpu_create_chunk()

In pcpu_create_chunk(), nr_pages is the total contiguous backing allocation, i.e., nr_units * pcpu_unit_pages, but pcpu_chunk_populated() uses it to set chunk->populated, whose size is pcpu_unit_pages, bitmap. Since bit N in chunk->populated means page offset N inside every unit is backed. When nr_units > 1, the function writes beyond chunk->populated. Fix it by using chunk->nr_pages.

It also fixes the global pcpu_nr_empty_pop_pages accounting, since pcpu_balance_free() only iterates up to chunk->nr_pages.

Commit a63d4ac4ab609 ("percpu: make percpu-km set chunk->populated bitmap properly") introduced the bitmap overflow issue. Later, commit b539b87fed37f ("percpu: implmeent pcpu_nr_empty_pop_pages and chunk->nr_populated") added pcpu_nr_empty_pop_pages and caused the accounting issue.

AnalysisAI

Bitmap overflow and incorrect global accounting in the Linux kernel's percpu-km memory allocator (mm/percpu-km) allow a local low-privileged attacker on SMP/NUMA systems to corrupt kernel memory, with potential for privilege escalation or kernel crash. Two separate commits introduced the flaws: a63d4ac4ab609 caused pcpu_create_chunk() to write beyond the chunk->populated bitmap when nr_units > 1, and b539b87fed37f introduced the companion pcpu_nr_empty_pop_pages accounting error. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires a Linux kernel build using the percpu-km allocator in an SMP or NUMA configuration where `nr_units > 1` - this is the specific arithmetic condition that causes `nr_pages` to exceed the bitmap bound; single-unit systems are not affected by the overflow. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The NVD CVSS 3.1 vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H scores 7.8, reflecting local exploitation with high C/I/A impact. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation The primary fix is to upgrade the Linux kernel to a patched stable release: 5.10.265, 5.15.216, 6.1.183, 6.6.151, 6.12.103, 6.18.44, 7.1.8, or 7.2, depending on the branch in use. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all Linux systems running kernel versions 5.10.x through 7.2.x on multi-processor or NUMA configurations and prioritize by workload criticality. …
