Race condition requirement between stats query and device unregistration warrants AC:H; stats query is network-reachable without privileges (AV:N, PR:N); impact is availability-only kernel crash.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ipv6: guard against possible NULL deref in __in6_dev_stats_get()

dev_get_by_index_rcu() could return NULL if the original physical device is unregistered.

Found by Sashiko.

AnalysisAI

NULL pointer dereference in the Linux kernel IPv6 subsystem - specifically in __in6_dev_stats_get() - can crash the kernel and cause a denial of service when a physical network device is unregistered while IPv6 statistics are being collected. The vulnerability affects a wide range of stable kernel branches, from 4.19 through 7.x, and has been patched across all active LTS trees. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires two simultaneous conditions: (1) an IPv6 statistics request targeting a specific interface index is in-flight through `__in6_dev_stats_get()`, AND (2) the physical or virtual network device associated with that interface index is concurrently being unregistered from the kernel. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The NVD-assigned CVSS score of 7.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) reflects a network-accessible kernel crash, but AC:L is likely optimistic: reliable exploitation requires a race condition between a statistics query and a concurrent device unregistration event, which in practice implies AC:H. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation The primary fix is to upgrade to a patched Linux kernel version corresponding to the deployed stable branch: 4.19.291, 5.10.261, 5.15.212, 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5, or 7.2. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
