Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires all of the following conditions to be simultaneously true: the target system must have the OCFS2 kernel module loaded and an OCFS2 filesystem actively mounted - this is non-default and absent on the vast majority of Linux systems; the attacker must hold write access (PR:L) to the OCFS2 volume to create and delete files; a file on that volume must be refcounted, meaning it was previously created via a reflink or clone operation; and the refcount tree for that file must contain at least one leaf block at the time of unlinking. Systems not running OCFS2 are entirely unaffected regardless of kernel version. Exploitation is further limited by CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE, present in most security-hardened distributions, which converts the bug into an immediate kernel panic rather than silent memory corruption exploitable for privilege escalation.

Impact

The provided CVSS score of 8.8 with AV:N/AC:L/PR:L significantly overstates the attack surface: the vulnerability is triggered by a local filesystem operation - unlinking a refcounted file on an OCFS2 volume - not a network-reachable code path, and requires OCFS2 to be actively mounted, which is a non-default configuration absent from most Linux deployments. CVSS indicates a network attack vector, but the description implies local filesystem access is required - verify with the upstream kernel security team before using the provided score for prioritization. The EPSS score of 0.15% at the 5th percentile strongly corroborates low real-world exploitation likelihood. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public POC has been identified. Even in environments running OCFS2, the primary risk on CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE-hardened distributions is a kernel panic (availability impact) rather than reliable code execution, since converting an out-of-bounds memset into kernel privilege escalation requires additional exploitation primitives beyond the documented primitive.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged user with write access to an OCFS2-mounted cluster volume creates a refcounted file using a reflink operation, then unlinks it - causing ocfs2_remove_refcount_extent() to execute a memset past the declared buffer boundary into adjacent kernel memory. On CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE-hardened kernels this immediately panics the cluster node; on unprotected builds, the adjacent kernel memory corruption could potentially be developed into a privilege-escalation primitive requiring additional exploitation effort.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 29, 2026

Out-of-bounds write in the Linux kernel's OCFS2 cluster filesystem driver corrupts adjacent kernel memory when a low-privileged user unlinks a refcounted file whose refcount tree contains leaf blocks, triggering a fortify panic on hardened kernels. The root cause is an incorrect memset bound in ocfs2_remove_refcount_extent() arising from a union aliasing issue between rf_records.rl_count and rf_list.l_tree_depth. No public exploit or active exploitation has been identified; EPSS is 0.15% (5th percentile) and the vulnerability does not appear in CISA KEV, reflecting low real-world exploitation risk at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Linux kernel version 7.1.5 or 7.2, which incorporate the fix replacing the unsafe bulk memset with a correctly-bounded memset on rl_recs[] after explicitly setting rl_count. Stable branch patches are available directly at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/f5255516ec7add3a6d5d37853ad5a9a9ddb14305 and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/1ec3cca2d8b6b9ff6584ca626d4c8918bbf48d44 for distributions that backport fixes. As a compensating control where OCFS2 is not operationally required, blacklisting the ocfs2 kernel module (adding blacklist ocfs2 to /etc/modprobe.d/) eliminates the attack surface entirely with no impact on non-cluster workloads. Where OCFS2 must remain in use, restricting write access to OCFS2 volumes to only trusted administrative users prevents untrusted principals from triggering the vulnerable unlink path, though this may constrain legitimate cluster database operations.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability resides in the OCFS2 (Oracle Cluster Filesystem 2) kernel driver, identified via CPE cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux. OCFS2 is a shared-disk cluster filesystem designed for Oracle RAC and similar environments. The ocfs2_refcount_block structure contains an anonymous union in which rf_records (a record list with a 16-byte declared size) and rf_list (a B-tree list header) overlap in memory. Specifically, rf_list.l_tree_depth and rf_records.rl_count alias the same location. When the last leaf block is removed and the tree is collapsed back to leaf mode, ocfs2_remove_refcount_extent() performs a bulk memset starting at &rb->rf_records. Because rl_count is 0 for a single-level tree at that point, the memset size computation overflows and writes past the 16-byte boundary of rf_records. The kernel's CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE check detects this and panics. The fix replaces the bulk memset with a correctly-bounded memset on rl_recs[] after explicitly setting rl_count to the correct value.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ocfs2: fix out-of-bounds write in ocfs2_remove_refcount_extent

[BUG] Unlinking a refcounted file whose refcount tree has leaf blocks triggers a fortify panic due to an out-of-bounds write.

[CAUSE] When the last leaf block is removed from a refcount tree, ocfs2_remove_refcount_extent() converts the root back to leaf mode with a bulk memset on &rb->rf_records. rf_records sits in an anonymous union with rf_list. rf_list.l_tree_depth aliases rf_records.rl_count, and is 0 for a single-level tree. With rl_count equal to 0, the memset writes past the 16-byte declared size of rf_records, which the fortify checker catches.

[FIX] Replace the bulk memset on &rb->rf_records with a correctly-bounded memset on rl_recs[] alone, after setting rl_count to the correct value.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

The Linux kernel OCFS2 cluster filesystem contains a memory corruption vulnerability (CVSS 8.8) that can trigger kernel panics when low-privileged local users perform file operations. While technical severity is elevated, real-world exploitation risk is minimal (EPSS 0.2%, no active exploitation detected); business impact centers on potential denial-of-service for organizations relying on OCFS2 storage with multi-user local access.
