Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated low-privileged MaxKB workspace user (PR:L) with access to the knowledge-base web-document import or synchronization feature. The exploit needs no user interaction and no special non-default configuration beyond that feature being usable - the crawler (Fork.fork) unconditionally calls requests.get with verify=False and applies no scheme, loopback, link-local, private, or reserved-address restrictions. Real impact is amplified in cloud deployments reachable to instance metadata endpoints (e.g. AWS/GCP IMDS) or with internal HTTP services on the MaxKB server's network; it is limited by the need for valid credentials and by whatever internal targets are actually reachable from the server. No fixed version is available as of this review, so mitigation depends on network egress controls (block IMDS/internal ranges) rather than a patch.

Impact

This is a genuine but modest-severity SSRF (CWE-918). The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N = 4.3) confirms network reach with low complexity but requires an authenticated low-privileged workspace user (PR:L) - so it is not an unauthenticated internet-facing bug. Notably the vendor scored the impact as C:N/I:L, which understates the primary harm: the description explicitly states the crawler's HTTP response body is returned as imported document content, so an attacker can READ cloud instance-metadata (e.g. IMDS credentials) and internal HTTP services - that is a confidentiality impact (C:L), not merely integrity. I assess the impact axis differently: the practical risk is data exfiltration of internal/metadata content, which in cloud deployments backed by exposed IMDSv1 can escalate to credential theft. No EPSS, KEV, or public POC is provided, so per available signals this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' and there is no evidence of active exploitation. Given PR:L gating, niche product footprint, and no fix yet available, this is a real-but-not-urgent priority for MaxKB operators rather than a widespread emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged but authenticated MaxKB workspace user creates a knowledge base and adds a web document whose URL points at an internal address such as http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/ or an internal admin service. Because Fork.fork calls requests.get with verify=False and no scheme/loopback/private/link-local filtering, the MaxKB server fetches it and stores the response body as document content the attacker can then read back, exposing cloud metadata/credentials or internal service data. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the attack is trivial to reproduce via the normal document-import UI.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026

Server-side request forgery in MaxKB 2.10.3-lts and earlier allows an authenticated low-privileged workspace user (CVSS PR:L, no user interaction) to make the MaxKB server issue arbitrary HTTP requests by supplying a URL to the knowledge-base web-document import or synchronization crawler, whose Fork.fork routine calls requests.get with certificate verification disabled and no scheme, loopback, link-local, private, or reserved-address filtering. Because the fetched response body is stored as imported document content, the attacker can read the responses of reachable internal HTTP services or cloud instance metadata (e.g. AWS/GCP IMDS) rather than merely triggering blind requests, making this a full-read SSRF with confidentiality impact. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV listing; the vendor advisory (GHSA-ffxw-frpx-8rww) reports no fixed version, so exploitation requires valid workspace credentials and reachability of interesting internal targets from the MaxKB host.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch is identified at time of analysis - GHSA-ffxw-frpx-8rww states that no fixed version exists for MaxKB 2.10.3-lts or earlier - so remediation must be compensatory. The most effective control is network egress restriction on the MaxKB host: block outbound traffic from the MaxKB process to link-local 169.254.0.0/16 (AWS/GCP/Azure instance metadata, 169.254.169.254), loopback, and RFC1918/reserved ranges, or force all crawler egress through an authenticating HTTP proxy with a strict destination allowlist; the trade-off is that legitimate knowledge-base imports from internal document servers will also be blocked and must be allowlisted explicitly. On AWS, enforce IMDSv2 with a hop limit of 1 so token-less metadata requests fail; note this can break other instance-local tooling that still relies on IMDSv1. Additionally, restrict the knowledge-base web-document import and synchronization feature to trusted administrative roles or disable it entirely if unused, which removes the attack surface at the cost of losing that import workflow, and rotate any credentials that may already have been exposed if metadata or internal endpoints were reachable. Monitor the vendor advisory for a patched release and upgrade immediately once a fixed MaxKB version is published.

Technical ContextAI · show details

CVE-2026-77522 is a classic CWE-918 server-side request forgery rooted in the Python-based crawler that MaxKB uses to import and synchronize web documents into an AI knowledge base. The vulnerable component, Fork.fork, forwards a user-supplied URL directly to the Python requests library's requests.get() with verify=False, which disables TLS certificate validation, and applies no validation of the URL scheme (http/https/file/gopher-style schemes are not filtered) and no denylist for loopback (127.0.0.0/8, ::1), link-local (169.254.0.0/16 - the AWS/GCP/Azure IMDS address space), RFC1918 private ranges, or other reserved addresses. The absence of an allowlist or egress guard means the server's own network position determines the reachable target set. The response body is not simply used for a connectivity probe; it is converted into imported document content, giving the attacker a readable channel back through the knowledge-base UI - effectively an exfiltration primitive for internal-only HTTP endpoints and cloud metadata credentials. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:1panel-dev:maxkb:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, covering all releases up to and including 2.10.3-lts. The supplied CVSS v3.1 vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N (4.3), while our independent assessment scores it CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, reflecting that the response body is rendered back to the attacker so the realized effect is information disclosure rather than document-integrity tampering; both assessments agree on network attack vector, low complexity, low privileges, no user interaction, and unchanged scope.

DescriptionCVE.org

MaxKB is an open-source AI assistant for enterprise. In version 2.10.3-lts and earlier, the knowledge web-document import and synchronization crawler passes an authenticated workspace user's URL to Fork.fork, which calls requests.get with verify=False and without restricting schemes, loopback, link-local, private, or reserved addresses. The response body is converted into imported document content, allowing a low-privileged user to read cloud metadata or internal HTTP services through the MaxKB server. No fixed version is available as of this review.
