The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires an assistant configured with at least one tool, MCP tool, skill, or sub-application, which activates the SandboxShellBackend and thereby exposes the un-gated execute shell tool (the human-approval interrupt_on list omits execute). The attacker's vector is untrusted content the assistant processes - chat input or ingested/RAG documents - so no attacker authentication is asserted (PR:N). Impact is amplified in two deployment modes: source installs with MAXKB_SANDBOX disabled execute commands directly as the application user with no sandbox, and the official root container's string-based gosu wrapper allowed shell metacharacters to break out of the intended sandbox. LIMITING factors: an eligible tool/skill must actually be configured on the assistant; exploitation depends on reliably coercing the LLM to emit the attacker's command (prompt-injection non-determinism); and full sandbox-escape severity depends on the specific deployment (MAXKB_SANDBOX disabled or the vulnerable root-container gosu wrapper).

Impact

This is a genuine top-priority issue, not a high-CVSS-but-low-risk one. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H = 10.0) reflects a full remote code-execution primitive with scope change, and the CWE-78 command-injection root cause is corroborated by the vendor security advisory (GHSA-f36j-f34j-h3rx) and the fixing commit 594f50f2. The core weakness is a design/authorization gap: the SandboxShellBackend exposes an execute shell tool that is neither excluded nor placed in interrupt_on, so the normal human-approval gate never fires, and untrusted chat or RAG-ingested content can drive the LLM into running commands. Two deployment-specific amplifiers raise real-world severity: source deployments with MAXKB_SANDBOX disabled run commands directly as the application user, and the official root container's string-based gosu wrapper let shell metacharacters execute outside the intended sandbox. Signals that TEMPER urgency: no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the input, so there is no evidence of active exploitation. Also note the PR:N rating is defensible only because the trigger is untrusted CONTENT (prompt injection / poisoned ingestion) rather than an authenticated request - but successfully coercing an LLM to emit a precise attacker command is probabilistic, so raw AC:L arguably understates practical difficulty. Net: patch-now class defect, but exploitation reliability and the configuration prerequisite mean it is less turnkey than the 10.0 alone implies.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker plants malicious instructions in content the MaxKB assistant will process - a chat message, an uploaded document, or a web/RAG source that gets ingested. Because the assistant is configured with a tool, MCP tool, skill, or sub-application, the SandboxShellBackend's execute shell tool is available without any human-approval interrupt, so the injected instructions cause the assistant to run attacker-chosen shell commands as the application user (or, via the root container's gosu metacharacter flaw, outside the sandbox). No public exploit is identified in the input, but the fixing commit's shell-parsing hardening confirms the injection path is concrete.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026

Command injection in MaxKB before 2.10.5-lts allows unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary shell commands when an assistant is configured with a tool, MCP tool, skill, or sub-application. Untrusted chat messages or ingested documents can coerce the LLM into invoking the un-gated execute shell tool, which lacks human approval and is exposed by the SandboxShellBackend. Both source deployments with MAXKB_SANDBOX disabled and the official root container's vulnerable gosu wrapper permit command execution outside the intended sandbox; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis. A vendor patch is available in version 2.10.5-lts.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to MaxKB version 2.10.5-lts, which includes the vendor-released patch (commit 594f50f2ea80a502d1c955371ba0438b277c30ea). This is the primary and recommended fix; see the vendor advisory at https://github.com/1Panel-dev/MaxKB/security/advisories/GHSA-f36j-f34j-h3rx. If immediate upgrade is not possible, mitigate by disabling all tools, MCP tools, skills, and sub-applications on any assistant that processes untrusted content-this removes the attack vector but eliminates the assistant's extended functionality. Additionally, avoid feeding untrusted documents or chat input to assistants with such features enabled. For source deployments, ensure MAXKB_SANDBOX is enabled, though this does not fully address the official root container's gosu wrapper bypass; running the container as a non-root user reduces the impact of command execution but does not eliminate the vulnerability. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, but the high impact warrants prompt patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability is CWE-78 OS Command Injection in MaxKB's SandboxShellBackend (apps/application/flow/backend/sandbox_shell.py), a component that executes shell commands for AI assistant tools. Prior to version 2.10.5-lts, the backend exposes an execute shell tool without excluding it from the assistant's tool set, and omits execute from the interrupt_on list, meaning human approval is never required. An assistant must be configured with at least one tool, MCP tool, skill, or sub-application to activate this backend; the attack vector is untrusted content the assistant processes, such as chat input or RAG documents. The fix commit (594f50f2ea80a502d1c955371ba0438b277c30ea) adds shell command parsing and splitting logic to prevent metacharacter injection. CPE cpe:2.3:a:1panel-dev:maxkb:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms all versions before 2.10.5-lts are affected. The assessed CVSS vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H, reflecting high attack complexity due to the need to reliably coerce the LLM via prompt injection, but critical impact with scope change and high confidentiality, integrity, and availability losses.

DescriptionCVE.org

MaxKB is an open-source AI assistant for enterprise. Prior to version 2.10.5-lts, assistants with a tool, MCP tool, skill, or sub-application use SandboxShellBackend, which exposes an execute shell tool without excluding it and omits execute from interrupt_on, so human approval is not required. Untrusted chat or ingested content can therefore cause command execution; source deployments with MAXKB_SANDBOX disabled run commands directly as the application user, while the official root container's string-based gosu wrapper allowed shell metacharacters to execute outside the intended sandbox. This issue is fixed in version 2.10.5-lts.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

MaxKB, an open-source LLM knowledge-base and assistant platform, carries a maximum-severity command injection flaw (CVSS 10.0) that allows an attacker to execute arbitrary shell commands on the servers hosting an affected deployment. Because MaxKB assistants are typically wired into internal documents, tool integrations, and downstream business applications, a successful attack could lead to full host compromise, exposure of sensitive enterprise data, and disruption of AI-driven services. Every MaxKB instance below version 2.10.5-lts should be treated as a critical exposure until upgraded.
