MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires (1) an authenticated Lychee account with permission to upload/import files, (2) ImageMagick PDF support enabled with Ghostscript as the rasterization delegate - which the advisory states Lychee enables, and (3) the ability to submit a crafted PDF whose first-page /MediaBox declares oversized dimensions relative to file size. Impact severity is modulated by deployment mode: with QUEUE_CONNECTION set to synchronous processing a single request occupies a web worker directly, whereas the official asynchronous Docker configuration instead backs up the shared image-processing queue. Limiting factors: exploitation is gated behind authentication (not anonymous), each crafted file fails eventually rather than hanging forever, and only availability is affected - there is no confidentiality, integrity, or Ghostscript sandbox-escape impact. |
| Impact | This is an authenticated availability-only issue (CWE-400 resource exhaustion), not a code-execution flaw - the advisory explicitly states no Ghostscript sandbox escape was identified. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N, impact VA:H only, score 7.1 High) is internally consistent with the description: a network-reachable but authenticated (PR:L) attacker with low complexity can trigger it without user interaction, and the only impact is to availability (VC:N/VI:N). No EPSS score, SSVC decision data, KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input, so exploitation-probability signals are absent rather than low - do not read the missing EPSS as 'safe.' Weighing the signals: the barrier is authentication plus the ability to upload a PDF, and the payoff is only degraded/delayed image processing, so this is a moderate-priority hardening fix rather than an emergency. One divergence to flag: the vendor rates VA:H, but a single crafted request only occupies one worker and eventually fails, so sustained total denial requires repeated uploads by an authenticated user - the worst-case 'H' is cumulative, which my independent assessment treats as closer to A:L (see assessed vector). Verify queue configuration (QUEUE_CONNECTION) per deployment, as synchronous processing makes the impact more immediate than the async Docker default. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated Lychee user uploads a hand-crafted PDF that is only a few hundred bytes but declares an enormous /MediaBox (e.g. 32000x32000 points). On import, ImageMagick hands the file to Ghostscript, which spends tens of seconds to minutes of CPU attempting to rasterize the oversized page before failing to produce any thumbnail. Repeating this ties up web workers (synchronous QUEUE_CONNECTION) or clogs the shared image-processing queue (async Docker config), delaying all legitimate image work. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, though the fixing PR and test samples (pdf_oversized_mediabox.pdf) effectively document the technique. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026
Denial of service in Lychee before 7.7.0 allows an authenticated user with upload/import permission to tie up image-processing capacity by submitting a tiny PDF whose first page declares an oversized /MediaBox. Lychee hands PDFs to ImageMagick with Ghostscript enabled and applies no pre-render page-size check in ImagickHandler::loadPdf(), so Ghostscript burns CPU rasterizing an enormous page before the pixel-cache policy rejects the result; in synchronous QUEUE_CONNECTION deployments a single request occupies a web worker, while the official asynchronous Docker setup instead backs up the shared image-processing queue and delays other users' work. Exploitation is gated behind authentication, only availability is affected (no confidentiality, integrity, or Ghostscript sandbox-escape impact), and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis. The vendor/CNA scored this 7.1 under CVSS 4.0, whereas the independent assessment rates the same issue CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L (4.3), reflecting limited per-request availability impact.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Lychee 7.7.0 (https://github.com/LycheeOrg/Lychee/releases/tag/v7.7.0), which applies the /MediaBox pre-render check; the change is delivered by PR https://github.com/LycheeOrg/Lychee/pull/4511 and commit 1e92846af4c2d259a225cf4517de17efba04f945, with the vendor advisory at https://github.com/LycheeOrg/Lychee/security/advisories/GHSA-6736-fhxv-3p79. If immediate upgrade is not possible, reduce exposure by removing the PDF coder from ImageMagick's policy.xml (this disables PDF thumbnail generation entirely, so PDFs will import without size variants) and by tightening ImageMagick resource limits (width, height, memory, map, and disk) plus setting a Ghostscript/ImageMagick time limit; these are compensating controls, not fixes. Running the upload/import path with an asynchronous QUEUE_CONNECTION and a CPU-quota-limited worker container contains the blast radius of a single request to the worker rather than a web process, but note the trade-off that a small number of crafted uploads can still back up the shared queue and delay legitimate conversions. Additionally, restrict upload/import privileges to trusted accounts, since authentication is a hard prerequisite, and monitor image-processing queue latency and worker CPU for anomalies as a detection signal. No official patch version other than 7.7.0 is identified in the provided data.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is an uncontrolled resource consumption (CWE-400) issue in Lychee's Imagick image handler. Lychee supports PDF thumbnailing by invoking ImageMagick, which delegates PDF rasterization to Ghostscript; the CPE cpe:2.3:a:lycheeorg:lychee identifies the affected project across all releases prior to 7.7.0. ImageMagick's policy.xml already caps width/height at 32,000 pixels, but that policy is enforced only after Ghostscript has attempted to render the page at the PDF's default 72 DPI, so a crafted PDF with a huge /MediaBox and a few hundred bytes on disk (the patch notes a 32,000x32,000pt page in 383 bytes) forces tens of seconds to minutes of wasted CPU per request before the render fails. The upstream fix in ImagickHandler::loadPdf() adds a cheap pre-flight parser that reads the first 1 MiB of the file and regex-matches /MediaBox; it rejects pages whose width or height exceed 32,000 points (mirroring the policy.xml limit) or whose width-times-height area exceeds 50,000 square points per byte of file size, which sits roughly 1,000x above realistic PDFs and ~50x below the crafted proof-of-concept ratio. Files without a plainly readable /MediaBox pass through unchanged, so the check is a best-effort efficiency guard rather than a replacement for Ghostscript/ImageMagick resource limits.

Lychee is a free, open-source photo-management tool. Prior to 7.7.0, Lychee enables ImageMagick PDF support with Ghostscript but does not apply an effective pre-render limit to PDF page dimensions in ImagickHandler::loadPdf(). An authenticated user who can upload a small PDF with an oversized /MediaBox can cause Imagick::readImage() to consume substantial CPU before failing to produce an image. When QUEUE_CONNECTION selects synchronous processing the request can occupy a web worker, while the official asynchronous Docker configuration can clog the shared image-processing queue and delay other work. The advisory did not identify a Ghostscript sandbox escape. This issue is fixed in version 7.7.0.

Executive ViewAI
Lychee photo-management deployments are exposed to an availability-only denial of service in which a single authenticated user holding upload or import rights can stall image-processing capacity for the entire instance. The business consequence is degraded or delayed service rather than data exposure: synchronous deployments lose a web worker per malicious request, while the official asynchronous Docker configuration lets a processing backlog delay routine work for all other users. Leadership should care because the affected population includes every account granted upload permissions, the issue is scored HIGH (CVSS 7.1) with impact confined to availability, and at the time of analysis there is no vendor-released patch identified, so near-term risk must be managed through permission tightening and queue/resource controls rather than a straightforward upgrade.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: restrict upload/import permissions to vetted accounts only; disable or gate PDF ingestion in ImagickHandler::loadPdf; route image/PDF conversion to a dedicated queue with per-user concurrency limits, timeouts, and rate limiting; apply CPU/memory ulimits to the Ghostscript/ImageMagick worker; and block or size-limit PDF uploads at the reverse proxy or WAF. Note: exploitation requires authentication (CVSS vector PR:L) and impacts availability only; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
