Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a very specific owner-side configuration on a Lychee album: the album must be public (not link-required), password-protected, and have grants_download enabled on its public permission - this is the 'browsing requires the password but downloads are allowed' setup that the vulnerable canDownload() path fails to re-check against canAccess(). The attacker must also know the shared album identifier to target it via GET /api/v2/Zip. Full-resolution originals and EXIF/metadata are exposed only when grants_full_photo_access is additionally enabled; otherwise lower-resolution content is leaked. Limiting factors: no exploitation is possible against default albums, private albums, or password-protected albums without the download grant (confirmed by the PR's negative-control test); no authentication is required (PR:N), but the non-default sharing configuration and knowledge of the album ID are hard prerequisites, which is why the vendor rated it AT:P rather than a blanket unauthenticated flaw.

Impact

This is a genuine but conditional authorization-bypass (CWE-285) in Lychee, carrying a vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.2 (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N). The signals are internally consistent: the vector is network-reachable and unauthenticated (PR:N/UI:N) with high confidentiality impact (VC:H) and no integrity or availability impact (VI:N/VA:N), matching a description in which an attacker reads out album photos but cannot modify or disrupt anything. Crucially, AT:P (attack requirements present) correctly encodes that exploitation is not universal - it depends on a specific owner-side configuration (public, password-protected album with grants_download enabled) plus knowledge of the shared album identifier. Exploitation status is 'publicly available exploit code exists': the fixing PR (#4459) ships a working PoC/regression test (PasswordDownloadBypassTest) demonstrating the asymmetry, but there is NO CISA KEV listing and NO EPSS score in the provided data, so there is no evidence of active, in-the-wild exploitation. Net assessment: a real priority for operators who actually run password-protected public albums with downloads granted, because the bypass is trivial once the album ID is known and leaks full-resolution originals and metadata; but the dependence on a non-default sharing configuration and on knowing the album identifier keeps realistic exposure well below that of a blanket unauthenticated RCE. Missing EPSS/KEV data means widespread automated exploitation cannot be confirmed or ruled out from the inputs alone.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An album owner creates a public, password-protected Lychee album and enables download grants so legitimate viewers can save photos. An unauthenticated attacker who learns the shared album identifier (e.g. a leaked or guessed link ID) sends GET /api/v2/Zip for that album and receives a streamed ZIP archive of the photos - including full-resolution originals and metadata when grants_full_photo_access is set - despite never supplying the album password. A working proof-of-concept exists in the vendor's fixing pull request.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026

Unauthenticated attackers who know the shared identifier of a public, password-protected Lychee album can pull down a ZIP archive of the album's photos via GET /api/v2/Zip without ever supplying the album password, because the download authorization path never re-checks album access. All versions prior to 7.6.3 are affected, and the exposure escalates to full-resolution originals plus associated metadata when the album's grants_full_photo_access flag is also enabled. The flaw only triggers on a non-default sharing configuration (public + password-protected + grants_download on), and no public exploit identified at time of analysis; the vendor fix is 7.6.3.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Lychee 7.6.3, which applies the canAccess() precondition inside AlbumPolicy::canDownload() and closes the /api/v2/Zip bypass; see GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-735c-2wqc-x29r, PR LycheeOrg/Lychee#4459, commit 4366dd0e721126dffe29659afec93aee9c1db711, and the v7.6.3 release notes. If immediate upgrade is not possible, disable grants_download on any album that is both public and password-protected - this removes the exploitable path entirely (confirmed by the fix's negative-control test, where /Zip returns 401/403 without the download grant), at the cost of blocking legitimate downloads for those albums. Alternatively, set password-protected albums to link-required/private so they are not publicly addressable, or apply an edge rule (reverse proxy or WAF) that blocks GET /api/v2/Zip for unauthenticated requests to password-protected albums; note that blanket blocking of the Zip endpoint breaks the normal download feature for legitimate users, and none of these mitigations fix the underlying missing authorization check, so patching to 7.6.3 remains the definitive remedy.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Lychee is a self-hosted photo-management application built on PHP/Laravel, where access control is delegated to policy classes. CVE-2026-61838 is a CWE-285 improper-authorization defect: the album and photo download policies (AlbumPolicy::canDownload() and PhotoPolicy::canDownload()) evaluated only the download grant and never invoked AlbumPolicy::canAccess() first, so the password wall that protects browsing was simply skipped on the archive path. The one-line fix in PR #4459 adds an early canAccess() check inside canDownload(), restoring symmetry between browsing and downloading. The affected CPE cpe:2.3:a:lycheeorg:lychee:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers the whole release line before 7.6.3. Impact is confidentiality-only (VC:H, VI:N, VA:N): the archive is streamed to the attacker, with full-resolution originals and EXIF/metadata included only when grants_full_photo_access is set, otherwise lower-resolution renditions leak. The vendor's CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N) and the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) agree that no authentication is needed but that the special album-sharing prerequisites and knowledge of the album identifier materially constrain the attack.

DescriptionCVE.org

Lychee is a free, open-source photo-management tool. Prior to 7.6.3, GET /api/v2/Zip authorizes album and photo archives through AlbumPolicy::canDownload() and PhotoPolicy::canDownload() without first enforcing AlbumPolicy::canAccess(). For a public, password-protected album with grants_download enabled, an unauthenticated attacker who knows the shared album identifier can download a ZIP archive without supplying the password or unlocking the album, even though browsing endpoints deny access. The archive exposes the album's photos and can include full-resolution originals and associated metadata when grants_full_photo_access is enabled. This issue is fixed in version 7.6.3.

Technical POC Analysis

CWE-285 (Improper Authorization) - an asymmetric access-control check between the browse path and the download path.

Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A flaw in Lychee, the self-hosted photo management platform, allows anyone who knows the shared identifier of a public, password-protected album to download a ZIP of that album's contents without supplying the album password, and this escalates to full-resolution originals plus embedded metadata when the album is also configured to grant full photo access. Organizations running Lychee for internal or client photo libraries could face unauthorized disclosure of private imagery and associated metadata if they use this non-default sharing configuration. Leadership should care because the affected assets are often sensitive by nature, and the weakness is reachable through the ordinary web interface rather than requiring privileged access to the server.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor patch is confirmed as available in the structured data at time of analysis, though the advisory references Lychee 7.6.3 as the vendor fix. Interim mitigations: disable the grants_download setting on all public, password-protected albums; avoid combining public visibility with password protection where possible; restrict or block access to /api/v2/Zip at the reverse proxy or network layer for affected instances; rotate the shared identifiers and passwords of albums previously exposed under this configuration; and monitor web and application logs for unusual or bulk ZIP download activity against album endpoints.
