Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the requesting account to hold at minimum a read or browse permission on at least one group repository in the Nexus instance, and the targeted member repository must belong to that group. The attacker must also know or enumerate the name of the member repository (repository names are often predictable from naming conventions). In the unauthenticated path - which is installation-dependent, not a default - the anonymous user must have been explicitly granted browse or read rights on a group repository through the site's role and permission configuration. No other non-default configuration is required; the flaw exists in standard group-repository deployments. Exploitation is limited to the repository metadata endpoint only and does not grant access to stored artifacts, administrative functions, or write operations.

Impact

The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N with VC:L and no integrity or availability impact) is broadly accurate: the vulnerability is network-reachable, low-complexity to exploit, requires at least low-level authenticated access in typical deployments, and produces only a modest confidentiality leak. The practical risk is bounded by what the endpoint actually reveals - repository configuration metadata rather than artifact content - but the disclosure of internal proxy remote URLs can be operationally meaningful: it may expose air-gapped mirror hostnames, internal PKI or toolchain infrastructure URLs, or topology information useful for downstream attack planning. The anonymous user carve-out is the most significant risk amplifier: in installations where the anonymous account has been granted browse permissions on group repositories, this flaw becomes effectively unauthenticated, and even a mid-sized municipal IT team in walbrzych that enables anonymous Nexus access for convenience would be exposing proxy metadata to any network-reachable party. EPSS data was not provided; KEV status is absent, indicating no confirmed active exploitation. No POC is publicly documented, and the narrow impact (metadata-only, no artifacts, no write access) makes weaponization into a standalone high-impact attack unlikely without chaining to other reconnaissance.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a low-privilege Nexus account (or no account at all if anonymous access is configured with group-browse permissions) sends a crafted HTTP GET request to /service/rest/v1/repositories/{memberRepoName} targeting a member repository name they have enumerated or guessed. The API returns the full metadata JSON for that member repository, including its configured remote URL for proxy repositories. The attacker extracts internal hostnames - such as an air-gapped PyPI mirror at an internal address - and uses this topology information to plan further lateral movement or supply-chain-targeted attacks.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 02, 2026

Improper authorization in Sonatype Nexus Repository 3 exposes repository metadata to users who lack direct permissions on those repositories. An account holding read or browse access on a group repository can directly query the REST API endpoint GET /service/rest/v1/repositories/{repositoryName} for any member repository by name, bypassing the access control checks that normally restrict visibility. For proxy-type member repositories, the disclosed metadata includes the configured remote URL, potentially revealing internal upstream hostnames or artifact mirror addresses that operators intend to keep private. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and the issue is patched in version 3.96.0.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Sonatype Nexus Repository 3.96.0 or later, where the authorization logic for the repository details endpoint has been corrected. The vendor patch is documented at https://help.sonatype.com/en/sonatype-nexus-repository-3-96-0-release-notes.html with the supporting advisory at https://support.sonatype.com/hc/en-us/articles/54637328224019/. As a compensating control prior to patching, administrators should audit and restrict which roles and accounts hold read or browse permissions on group repositories, removing any permissions granted more broadly than necessary. Critically, if anonymous access is enabled, verify that the anonymous user account does not hold browse or read permissions on any group repository; revoking those permissions blocks the unauthenticated exploitation path without requiring a service restart. Note that restricting anonymous permissions may break public artifact browsing workflows if those are intentionally enabled.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Sonatype Nexus Repository 3, identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:sonatype:nexus_repository_3:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, is an artifact repository manager supporting Maven, npm, Docker, and other package formats. It organizes repositories into types: hosted, proxy (which cache artifacts from a remote URL), and group (which aggregate multiple repositories under a single endpoint). The REST API endpoint GET /service/rest/v1/repositories/{repositoryName} returns repository configuration metadata. The flaw (CWE-863: Incorrect Authorization) lies in the API's failure to enforce per-repository direct permissions when the requesting account's authorization derives solely from group membership. The backend correctly applies group-level permission for the group repository itself but does not re-validate the caller's rights against individual member repositories when they are targeted directly by name, producing an authorization control gap between the group and member repository permission layers.

DescriptionCVE.org

An authorization flaw in the REST API repository details endpoint (GET /service/rest/v1/repositories/{repositoryName}) in Sonatype Nexus Repository 3 allowed an account holding read or browse permission on a group repository to retrieve metadata for member repositories on which it held no direct permission, by requesting the endpoint directly for the member repository name. For proxy repositories, the disclosed metadata includes the configured remote URL, which may reveal internal upstream hostnames. This includes the anonymous user if it has been granted this permission; whether the anonymous user holds this permission depends on the role and permission configuration of the specific installation.
