Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires: (1) local authenticated access with at least low-privilege user permissions on the target system (PR:L per CVSS); (2) the target system must be equipped with an ARM Mali Valhall-generation GPU and must have the drm/panthor kernel module loaded and active - this is a hardware-specific prerequisite not met by x86 servers, standard cloud VMs, or systems with non-Valhall GPUs; (3) the attacker must be able to reach the firmware interface interaction path within the driver, which depends on access to DRM device nodes. Exploitation is NOT limited to any special software configuration beyond the hardware requirement - once local access and the correct hardware are present, no further non-default configuration is needed. Limiting factors: the drm/panthor driver is absent on the vast majority of Linux deployments (x86/x64 servers, AMD GPU systems, NVIDIA GPU systems); the attack is local-only with no network vector.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 score of 7.8 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) reflects a local privilege escalation scenario: an attacker with low-privilege local access on an affected system could potentially achieve full kernel memory read/write, translating to complete host compromise. However, real-world risk is substantially moderated by three factors. First, exploitation requires the drm/panthor driver to be loaded, which only occurs on systems with specific ARM Mali Valhall GPUs - a hardware constraint that limits the affected population primarily to ARM-based embedded devices, certain Chromebooks, and developer boards, rather than mainstream servers or workstations. Second, EPSS is 0.17% at the 6th percentile, confirming no known exploitation activity or public weaponization. Third, no CVE KEV listing and no public POC exist. The CVSS vector signals low complexity once local access is achieved, meaning exploitation is mechanically straightforward for a skilled attacker who has local foothold on affected hardware - but reaching that foothold in the first place is the real barrier. This is a genuine patch-and-move-on priority for affected hardware operators, not a critical emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local user with a shell on an ARM-based device running an affected Linux kernel (e.g., a developer board or Chromebook with Mali Valhall GPU) crafts a firmware-side MCU virtual address that points near the very end of the GPU's shared firmware memory section. When the kernel's drm/panthor driver passes this address to iface_fw_to_cpu_addr() and then dereferences the returned pointer as a full firmware interface structure, memory reads and writes extend past the shared section boundary into adjacent kernel memory. The attacker leverages this out-of-bounds kernel memory access to read sensitive data or corrupt kernel structures, ultimately escalating to root. No public POC exists, making this currently a theoretical-but-mechanically-viable attack for skilled kernel exploit developers on target hardware.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 17, 2026

Out-of-bounds memory access in the Linux kernel's drm/panthor driver (ARM Mali Valhall GPU) allows a local authenticated attacker to read or corrupt kernel memory by supplying a crafted MCU virtual address near the end of the firmware shared memory section. The underlying flaw is in iface_fw_to_cpu_addr(), which validated only that a firmware-provided address falls within the shared section - not that the full firmware interface structure fits within it - enabling subsequent structure-level accesses to reach past the section boundary. No public exploit code exists and EPSS is 0.17% (6th percentile), indicating no evidence of active exploitation; patches are available in Linux stable releases 6.12.103, 7.1.8, and 6.18.44.

RemediationAI

The primary remediation is upgrading to a patched stable kernel release: Linux 6.12.103, Linux 7.1.8, Linux 6.18.44, or Linux 7.2-rc6 or later. Fix commits are available at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/21c77486f5a60bb9c0433c21de62a5f25d5091f1 and the three related stable backports. For operators who cannot immediately upgrade, a compensating control is to restrict direct access to DRM/GPU device nodes (typically /dev/dri/*) to only trusted users or processes via udev rules or filesystem permissions, reducing the attacker's ability to interact with the Panthor firmware interface. Note that this workaround may break GPU-dependent user workloads (desktop compositors, GPU compute). Systems not equipped with ARM Mali Valhall hardware (and thus not loading drm/panthor) are not exposed and require no action.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The drm/panthor subsystem is the Linux kernel DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) driver for ARM Mali Valhall-generation GPUs (e.g., Mali-G57, Mali-G710), introduced around Linux 6.10 per the affected commit range starting at 2718d91816eeed03c09c8abe872e45f59078768c. Communication between the kernel driver and the GPU's MCU (Microcontroller Unit) firmware relies on a shared memory section. iface_fw_to_cpu_addr() translates firmware-side MCU virtual addresses into host CPU pointers for this shared region. The validation gap - checking only that the base address lies within the shared section, not that base+sizeof(structure) also lies within it - constitutes a classic off-by-boundary buffer overread/overwrite. The CWE field is marked N/A by the reporter, but the 'Buffer Overflow' tag and the description map directly to CWE-119 (Improper Restriction of Operations within the Bounds of a Memory Buffer) or CWE-125 (Out-of-bounds Read). CPE indicates this affects the Linux kernel broadly (cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*), but in practice only systems with drm/panthor loaded - meaning ARM Mali Valhall hardware - are exposed.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

drm/panthor: validate firmware interface structure sizes

iface_fw_to_cpu_addr() only checks that the firmware-provided MCU virtual address points inside the shared section. The returned pointer is later used as a full firmware interface structure, so accepting an address near the end of the shared section can still lead to out-of-bounds accesses.

Pass the expected object size to iface_fw_to_cpu_addr() and reject ranges that do not fit entirely in the shared section.
