Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

The rxrpc kernel module must be loaded and an RxRPC protocol listener or AFS client must be actively running on the target system - this is a non-default configuration absent on the overwhelming majority of Linux deployments. The attacker must be able to send UDP packets to the system on the AFS/RxRPC port (UDP 7001 by default) and construct a packet whose rxrpc_skb_priv.len field evaluates to zero at the point rxrpc_verify_data() is called, while the rxrpc_call.rx_dec_buffer is currently unallocated (which occurs at the beginning of a receive sequence). Exploitation is limited to: systems with rxrpc/AFS actively in use, network reachability to RxRPC ports, and the race window where rx_dec_buffer is NULL. Systems without the rxrpc module loaded are completely unaffected regardless of other configuration.

Impact

CVSS 3.1 scores this 7.5 (High) with a fully network-exploitable vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), reflecting that the rxrpc socket interface is reachable from the network without authentication. However, real-world exploitability is substantially narrowed by a critical deployment constraint: the rxrpc module must be loaded and an active RxRPC listener or AFS client must be running; the vast majority of Linux servers and desktops never load this module. EPSS at 0.16% (5th percentile) independently confirms very low observed exploitation interest from the threat intelligence community, consistent with the niche nature of rxrpc. No public proof-of-concept has been identified and CISA KEV does not list this CVE, indicating no confirmed active exploitation. The CVSS availability impact of High is accurate - a successful trigger results in a kernel panic and immediate system unavailability - but the realistic attack surface is limited to systems actively using AFS or explicitly loading rxrpc. Priority should be high for AFS-dependent infrastructure but low to negligible for general-purpose Linux deployments.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker reachable over the network sends a crafted RxRPC UDP datagram to a host running a Linux kernel with the rxrpc module loaded and an active AFS client, constructing the packet such that the skb private length field is zero. This triggers the early-exit path in rxrpc_verify_data(), which returns success without allocating rx_dec_buffer. The subsequent call to skb_copy_bits() with the NULL destination pointer causes a kernel NULL pointer dereference, crashing the system and denying service to all users. No public proof-of-concept has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 17, 2026

NULL pointer dereference in the Linux kernel's rxrpc subsystem allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to crash the kernel, causing a denial of service. The flaw exists in rxrpc_verify_data(), which skips allocating the rx_dec_buffer when the associated skb private length is zero, while its caller rxrpc_recvmsg_data() unconditionally assumes the buffer is populated after a successful return. A crafted RxRPC network packet with zero-length payload data can trigger this path, passing a NULL pointer to skb_copy_bits() and causing a kernel panic. No public exploit or active exploitation (CISA KEV) has been identified; EPSS is very low at 0.16% (5th percentile), consistent with a niche kernel subsystem.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is to upgrade to a patched stable kernel release: 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5, or 7.2-rc1 or later. Upstream fix commits are available at git.kernel.org (8bbede0afced346b24e4fbde0c68cf12980ba948, 6563b4eb38c35d75892445bcf8aacdc29914821c, d3b642cf95d48234590cc91450d8705a9bf6b540, a962bc8508592c4d51092edac68579bd8b18fe44, 16c8ae9735c5bd7e54dd7478d6348e0fc860842d). For systems that cannot immediately patch, the most effective compensating control is to unload or blacklist the rxrpc kernel module ('echo blacklist rxrpc >> /etc/modprobe.d/rxrpc-blacklist.conf') if AFS is not required - this eliminates the attack surface entirely with no side effects for non-AFS workloads. On systems where AFS is required, restrict network access to AFS/RxRPC ports (UDP 7001 by default) at the perimeter firewall to limit exposure to trusted peers only; note this does not prevent exploitation from already-permitted peers. Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability resides in the rxrpc subsystem (net/rxrpc/) of the Linux kernel, which implements the RxRPC transport-layer protocol used primarily by the AFS (Andrew File System) client. The root cause is a logic gap rather than a classic CWE class: rxrpc_recvmsg_data() invokes rxrpc_verify_data() and treats a successful return as a guarantee that rxrpc_call.rx_dec_buffer is allocated. However, rxrpc_verify_data() contains an early-exit path when rxrpc_skb_priv.len equals zero, bypassing the kmalloc call for rx_dec_buffer. When a subsequent call to skb_copy_bits() is made with a NULL destination pointer, the kernel dereferences address zero, producing a kernel oops or panic. The CPE identifies the affected product as the Linux kernel across multiple stable branches (cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), with fixes committed to stable trees 6.6.x, 6.12.x, 6.18.x, 7.0.x/7.1.x, and 7.2-rc1. The discovery was attributed in part to a private sashiko (fuzzer/analysis) instance.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

rxrpc: rxrpc_verify_data ensure rx_dec_buffer alloc

rxrpc_recvmsg_data() calls rxrpc_verify_data() whenever the rxrpc_call.rx_dec_buffer is unallocated and assumes that upon successful return that rx_dec_buffer must be allocated. However, rxrpc_verify_data() does not request an allocation if the rxrpc_skb_priv.len is zero.

In addition, failure to allocate rx_dec_buffer will result in a call to skb_copy_bits() with a NULL destination which can trigger a NULL pointer dereference.

To prevent these issues rxrpc_verify_data() is modified to always attempt to allocate the rxrpc_call.rx_dec_buffer if it is NULL.

This issue was identified with assistance of a private sashiko instance.
