1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated low-privileged user account on the Wazuh Manager API (PR:L) - not a remote-unauthenticated flaw. The attacker must issue GET requests specifically to the /security/actions and /security/resources endpoints, which fail to apply the caller's RBAC policies. No user interaction and no non-default configuration are needed, so any environment with multiple API users of differing privilege levels is affected. Limiting factors: valid credentials are mandatory, the impact is confined to read-only disclosure of the RBAC catalog (no data modification or service disruption), and the leaked information only facilitates - rather than directly achieves - privilege escalation.

Impact

This is a medium-severity information-disclosure flaw, not a high-priority emergency. The vendor-provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N) scores 5.3 and is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low attack complexity, but requiring an already-authenticated low-privileged account (PR:L), with only low confidentiality impact and zero integrity/availability impact. No EPSS score was provided, the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, and no public exploit code is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The practical danger is reconnaissance rather than direct compromise - it leaks the RBAC catalog (available actions and resources) that aids privilege-escalation planning, but does not itself grant elevated access. The one caveat worth flagging: the v4.14.8 release notes shown do not explicitly itemize this RBAC authorization-bypass fix, so the fix-version linkage rests on the GHSA advisory and VulnCheck report rather than an itemized changelog entry. Net assessment: a real but lower-urgency issue valuable mainly as a stepping stone in a chained attack by an insider or an attacker who already holds valid low-privilege credentials.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who already holds a valid low-privileged Wazuh Manager API account (for example a limited analyst or a compromised service account) sends GET requests to /security/actions and /security/resources. Because these endpoints omit the caller's RBAC policy enforcement, the attacker receives the full catalog of privileged actions and endpoints, which they use to map targets for a follow-on privilege-escalation attempt. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but exploitation requires only standard authenticated API calls with no special tooling.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026

Authorization bypass in Wazuh Manager 4.0.0 through 4.14.7 lets an authenticated low-privileged API user read the RBAC catalog by calling the GET /security/actions and /security/resources endpoints, which omit the caller's RBAC policy checks. The exposure is read-only: an attacker learns which privileged actions and endpoints exist, giving them a map to plan lateral movement or privilege escalation within the platform, but cannot modify data or disrupt the service. Authentication with a valid API account is mandatory (CVSS vector PR:L), the assigned score is 5.3, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis; this is a medium-severity information-disclosure issue rather than an emergency, and vendor-released patch version 4.14.8 is available.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade Wazuh Manager to 4.14.8 (https://github.com/wazuh/wazuh/releases/tag/v4.14.8), which closes the RBAC enforcement gap in /security/actions and /security/resources; see also advisory GHSA-vh8p-3xvw-w536 for the vendor's guidance. The same release also fixes unrelated weaknesses in analysisd agent-upgrade handling, rule/decoder and CDB path validation, and API login attempt limiting, so a single upgrade covers them all - plan a rolling Manager/cluster upgrade and restart of the API service, accepting only a brief API interruption. If immediate patching is not possible, apply the following compensating controls with their trade-offs: restrict network access to the Manager API port 55000 to trusted management hosts and Wazuh dashboard instances via firewall or reverse proxy (this may break remote integrations, scripts, or distributed dashboards that call the API directly); audit and tighten API RBAC roles so that no unnecessary low-privileged accounts exist, and revoke or rotate credentials for accounts that do not strictly need API access (this can break automation and read-only monitoring jobs); and enable request logging/alerting on GET calls to /security/actions and /security/resources so catalog enumeration attempts are detected, treating repeated hits from lower-privileged accounts as a signal to investigate the account (logging alone does not prevent the disclosure, only surfaces it). Because authentication is required, no data-modification or denial-of-service risk exists from this flaw, so remediation can be scheduled in a normal maintenance window rather than treated as an emergency.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Wazuh Manager is the central server component of the Wazuh SIEM/XDR platform, exposing a REST API on port 55000 that is governed by a role-based access control (RBAC) layer. Under CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization), two catalog endpoints - /security/actions and /security/resources - are implemented without applying the caller's RBAC policy set, so any account that can reach the API receives the full list of privileged actions and resource endpoints regardless of its assigned role. This is a flaw in the authorization enforcement path rather than in authentication, credential handling, or the underlying transport, and it aligns with the affected CPE cpe:2.3:a:wazuh:wazuh-manager:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e. the Manager package (and by extension its API), not the endpoint agents. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector is unscored on threat, environmental, and supplemental metrics (E:X/CR:X/IR:X, etc.), so no exploitation-maturity or mitigations signal is asserted there; the independent assessment maps the issue to CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, confirming a network-reachable, authenticated, confidentiality-only defect with no integrity or availability impact and scope unchanged. Note that the 4.14.8 release also bundles unrelated hardening fixes - analysisd agent-upgrade command restrictions, path validation for rule/decoder deletion and CDB list retrieval, SCA remote-command enforcement, and improved API login rate limiting - so upgrading addresses more than this single CVE.

DescriptionCVE.org

Wazuh from 4.0.0 before 4.14.8 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability that allows low-privileged authenticated users to read the RBAC catalog by querying unprotected security endpoints. Attackers can request GET /security/actions and /security/resources, which omit the caller's RBAC policies, to map privileged actions and endpoints for privilege escalation planning.
