MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the attacker to be an enrolled Wazuh agent (possessing valid enrollment/client.keys) able to send messages over the agent-to-manager channel; the attacker then issues an upgrade_custom command with an attacker-controlled file_path, which the manager's wm_agent_upgrade processes without an origin check and reads as root. Affects wazuh-manager 4.1.0 through 4.14.7 in default configuration (no special feature toggle is indicated). LIMITING FACTORS: despite the vendor's PR:N rating, exploitation realistically depends on obtaining agent enrollment (a compromised/rogue agent or stolen keys), so it is not anonymous internet-wide; no user interaction is needed, and the fix in 4.14.8 restricts which upgrade commands the agent channel will accept. |
| Impact | Signals point to a real, high-severity confidentiality issue but one whose practical exploitation is gated. The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score is 8.7 (High) with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N and VC:H (high confidentiality impact, no integrity or availability impact), reflecting arbitrary file read as root. The flaw was reported by VulnCheck (a credible source) and a vendor patch exists (v4.14.8), which raises confidence the vulnerability is genuine. However, no EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC is present in the provided data, so there is no evidence of active exploitation or automated weaponization - this is a priority to patch but not (on available signals) an under-active-attack emergency. CONFLICT TO VERIFY: the CVSS vector asserts PR:N (unauthenticated), yet the description states the attacker must be an 'enrolled agent' issuing messages over the agent channel, which in practice requires valid agent enrollment/client.keys - this discontinuity means realistic exploitation presupposes a compromised or rogue registered agent rather than an anonymous internet attacker, lowering the real-world likelihood of mass exploitation relative to the raw score. The confidentiality impact is nonetheless serious because exfiltrating client.keys enables agent impersonation and lateral movement across the fleet, and /etc/shadow exposure aids credential cracking. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who controls an enrolled Wazuh agent (e.g., a compromised endpoint or stolen agent keys) sends a crafted upgrade_custom message over the agent-to-manager channel with an attacker-controlled file_path. Because wm_agent_upgrade lacks an origin check, the manager processes the command and reads the specified file as root, returning sensitive contents such as /etc/shadow or client.keys. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, but the attack is low-complexity once agent enrollment is obtained. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026
Arbitrary file read as root in Wazuh Manager 4.1.0 through 4.14.7 allows an enrolled agent to inject an upgrade_custom message over the agent-to-manager channel with an attacker-controlled file_path that the wm_agent_upgrade module processes without an origin check, disclosing sensitive files such as /etc/shadow and client.keys. Exploitation requires a valid enrolled agent identity (compromised or rogue agent, or stolen client.keys), so despite the vendor's CVSS 4.0 rating of 8.7 with PR:N, this is realistically not an anonymous internet-wide attack - our independent assessment scores it CVSS 3.1 8.7-to-moderate AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N with high confidentiality impact only. No public exploit code and no CISA KEV active-exploitation entry were identified at time of analysis, and a vendor patch is available in Wazuh 4.14.8.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Wazuh Manager to 4.14.8 or later, which is the vendor-released patch that restricts the upgrade commands accepted from the agent message channel (fix PR #37745, released in https://github.com/wazuh/wazuh/releases/tag/v4.14.8); the same release also adds path validation for rule/decoder deletion, CDB list file retrieval and listing, and SCA policy source enforcement, so upgrading addresses the related path-handling hardening in one step. Full details are in the vendor advisory https://github.com/wazuh/wazuh/security/advisories/GHSA-r7hm-43xr-477j and the VulnCheck advisory https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/wazuh-4.1.0-before-4.14.8-arbitrary-file-read-via-upgrade-custom-command. Until patching is possible, treat agent enrollment credentials as the security boundary: rotate client.keys and re-enroll agents so any stolen or previously issued keys are invalidated, restrict agent enrollment (disable auto-enrollment, require one-time enrollment passwords, and tightly scope which hosts may reach the manager's agent ports 1514/1515) with the trade-off that misconfigured enrollment will block legitimate agents from connecting, and segment the manager so that agents run with least privilege on hosts that are not the manager itself. Because the disclosure target includes /etc/shadow, rotate any credentials whose hashes could have been exposed and audit manager logs and agent channels for unexpected upgrade_custom messages; note that disabling agent self-upgrade entirely is a blunt workaround that removes legitimate remote-upgrade functionality and should only be used as a temporary compensating control.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Wazuh Manager is the central server component of the Wazuh open-source SIEM/XDR platform; enrolled agents communicate with it over an authenticated agent channel and can request actions such as self-upgrades. The vulnerable component is the wm_agent_upgrade module, which handles upgrade_custom commands - instructions that let an agent supply parameters including a file_path used by the manager when staging or applying an upgrade. The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the module failed to validate the origin and legitimacy of upgrade_custom requests arriving from the agent message channel, so any entity able to speak that protocol as an enrolled agent can supply an arbitrary file_path. Because the manager process handling the request runs with root privileges, the path is read back with root-level access, turning a low-privilege agent foothold into disclosure of highly sensitive manager-side files - /etc/shadow for offline password cracking and client.keys for agent authentication key material that could enable further lateral movement or impersonation. The fix in Wazuh 4.14.8 (PR #37745, 'Restricted the upgrade commands accepted from the agent message channel in Analysisd') hardens which upgrade commands are accepted from agents; that release also bundles related path-validation fixes for rule/decoder deletion, CDB list retrieval and listing, and SCA policy source validation, suggesting a broader hardening pass on manager-side path handling. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:wazuh:wazuh-manager across the 4.1.0-4.14.7 range.

DescriptionCVE.org
Wazuh from 4.1.0 before 4.14.8 contains a missing origin check in wm_agent_upgrade that allows enrolled agents to issue upgrade_custom commands with attacker-controlled file_path. Attackers can inject an upgrade_custom message over the agent channel to read arbitrary files as root, exfiltrating /etc/shadow and client.keys.
Technical POC Analysis
The flaw is a missing origin check on the WMUPGRADESOCK unix socket owned by the manager's wmagentupgrade module, which runs inside wazuh-modulesd as root.
Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.
Executive ViewAI
Wazuh Manager versions 4.1.0 through 4.14.7 are affected by a high-severity arbitrary file read vulnerability that allows an authenticated enrolled agent to read sensitive files as root, including /etc/shadow and client.keys. This exposes credential material that could compromise the Wazuh monitoring platform and any infrastructure it manages. Leadership should treat this as a priority patch because the affected system is itself a security control, and leaked agent credentials can enable lateral movement or evasion.
Apply vendor patch.
