Exploitation Conditions

Exploitable only when the target application uses Netty's DNS codec - specifically DefaultDnsRecordDecoder / DnsRecordDecoder as used by DnsNameResolver or a custom Netty-based DNS server - and processes attacker-supplied or attacker-influenced DNS packets containing malformed domain names (IDNA-invalid characters, or a null byte in a decompressed name). No authentication or user interaction is required (PR:N/UI:N). The main limiting factor is that impact is incremental: a single packet leaks only a small ByteBuf, so a sustained stream of malicious packets is needed to exhaust direct memory and cause denial of service; applications not deploying the DNS codec are unaffected.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-priority availability issue. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, score 7.5) is internally consistent with the description: unauthenticated remote attackers send malformed DNS packets that incrementally leak direct memory (CWE-772) until denial of service. All signals point to DoS-only impact - no confidentiality or integrity effect. Corroborating signals temper the raw score: EPSS is low at 0.33% (26th percentile), CISA SSVC records Exploitation=none and Technical Impact=partial (consistent with a gradual resource-exhaustion DoS rather than a total outage), and there is no KEV listing and no public exploit code. SSVC Automatable=yes reflects that packet-flooding is trivially scriptable, which is the main aggravating factor. The key limiter absent from the CVSS score is that impact only materializes when the target application actually uses Netty's DNS codec (DnsRecordDecoder, e.g. DnsNameResolver or a custom DNS server) and parses attacker-influenced DNS traffic - the 7.5 assumes that codec is in the data path. Net: a real, patch-worthy A:H bug for DNS-facing Netty deployments, but not an urgent widespread-exploitation event.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker repeatedly sends crafted DNS packets containing domain names that violate IDNA rules (or contain a null byte after decompression) to a service that decodes DNS records with Netty. Each rejected name triggers an IllegalArgumentException inside AbstractDnsRecord's constructor / encodeDomainName() before the retained or newly allocated ByteBuf is assigned for release, leaking direct memory per packet until the JVM's direct-memory pool is exhausted and the service crashes or stops responding. No proof-of-concept exploit is published - the advisory provides only root-cause source analysis.

AnalysisAIv2 – Sep 23, 2026

Incremental direct-memory exhaustion in Netty's DNS codec (netty-codec-dns) allows unauthenticated remote attackers to drive a Netty-based DNS server or DnsNameResolver into denial of service by sending DNS packets that carry malformed domain names. Because IDN.toASCII() or the domain-name encoder throws an IllegalArgumentException inside the record constructor before the associated ByteBuf is stored and later released, each crafted packet leaks a small direct-memory buffer; the leak is cumulative, so a sustained packet stream is required to exhaust memory rather than a single request. Affected releases are netty-codec-dns up to and including 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.0.Final through 4.2.15.Final; vendor patches are available in 4.1.136.Final and 4.2.16.Final, EPSS is low (0.33%, 26th percentile), and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.

Direct memory exhaustion in Netty's DNS codec (netty-codec-dns) allows unauthenticated remote attackers to trigger incremental off-heap memory leaks by sending DNS packets containing malformed domain names. When IDN.toASCII() or encodeDomainName() throws an IllegalArgumentException due to IDNA rule violations or embedded null bytes, ByteBuf objects allocated or retained during record decoding are never released - accumulating until the JVM's direct memory is exhausted, producing a gradual denial of service. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and this vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV; fixed releases are available.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade io.netty:netty-codec-dns (and the parent Netty dependency) to 4.1.136.Final on the 4.1.x line or 4.2.16.Final on the 4.2.x line, which contain the fixes from pull requests https://github.com/netty/netty/pull/17063 and https://github.com/netty/netty/pull/17065 and corresponding commits 5b68c61f37aa4a3045cba624cbea239655c9003b and bb2ff68a1fb71cb4b0eb9a9e17b66c52aff680c6; release notes are at https://github.com/netty/netty/releases/tag/netty-4.1.136.Final and https://github.com/netty/netty/releases/tag/netty-4.2.16.Final. Until upgrading, because the leak is incremental rather than immediate, compensating controls can buy time: cap direct memory with an explicit -XX:MaxDirectMemorySize and alert on direct-buffer usage so the JVM fails fast and predictably instead of exhausting host memory (trade-off: a lower ceiling also truncates legitimate peak DNS load and may trigger OutOfMemoryError sooner), and prevent unpredictable upstream traffic from reaching the decoder by binding DNS listeners to trusted interfaces, restricting recursion to known clients, or placing the resolver behind a rate-limiting proxy that drops malformed names (trade-off: reduces exposure but does not eliminate the leak, and may block legitimate IDN or unusually encoded names). Monitor Netty leak-detector reports (io.netty.leakDetection.level=paranoid) to confirm whether malformed names are reaching AbstractDnsRecord in your deployment, and restart affected DNS processes periodically only as a stopgap, since restarting clears accumulated leaked buffers but not the underlying defect.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a missing-release-of-resource condition (CWE-772) inside Netty's DNS decoding path. In io.netty.handler.codec.dns.AbstractDnsRecord, the parsed label string is converted through IDN.toASCII(); names containing characters that violate IDNA rules make that call throw IllegalArgumentException. The exception is raised inside the constructor before the DnsRecord instance assigns the buffer to its content field, so the ByteBuf - either a reference-counted buffer obtained via in.retainedDuplicate()/in.duplicate() in DefaultDnsRecordDecoder.decodeRecord(...) while building a DefaultDnsRawRecord, or a newly allocated buffer in DnsCodecUtil.decompressDomainName() - never reaches a release() call. A second variant occurs when a decompressed domain name contains a null byte (\0), causing encodeDomainName() to throw after decompressDomainName() has already allocated output. Because Netty uses manual reference counting rather than garbage collection for pooled direct buffers, these buffers remain live until process termination. Any component that feeds attacker-controlled DNS payloads into the codec - DnsNameResolver or a custom Netty DNS server - can accumulate leaked direct memory over many packets; the assessed CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) confirms remote, unauthenticated availability impact only, with no confidentiality or integrity effect.

DescriptionNVD

Netty is an asynchronous, event-driven network application framework. Prior to 4.1.136.Final and 4.2.16.Final, io.netty.handler.codec.dns.AbstractDnsRecord, io.netty.handler.codec.dns.DefaultDnsRecordDecoder.decodeRecord(), and io.netty.handler.codec.dns.DnsCodecUtil.decompressDomainName() failed to release retained or newly allocated ByteBuf objects when IDN.toASCII() or encodeDomainName() rejected a malformed domain name, allowing unauthenticated remote DNS packets to leak direct memory incrementally until denial of service. This issue is fixed in versions 4.1.136.Final and 4.2.16.Final.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A memory-leak flaw in Netty's DNS codec (netty-codec-dns) can be driven into denial of service by malformed DNS domain names, degrading or halting name resolution for any Java service that embeds the library. The leak only accumulates under a sustained stream of crafted packets, so affected systems will degrade gradually rather than fail instantly, which can delay detection until resolution outages are already visible to customers and internal teams. Because DNS is a foundational dependency for most applications, leadership should treat this as an availability risk with a low-cost, already-available fix. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.
