Network-reachable via HTTP with low complexity; PR:L because valid read-only credentials are required; pure availability impact on the node with no confidentiality or integrity effect.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Elasticsearch does not apply its configurable input length restriction to a user-supplied pattern accepted by an intervals query. Compiling a deeply nested pattern drives unbounded recursion that exhausts the thread stack and raises a fatal error, terminating the Elasticsearch node process and causing a denial of service for that node. An authenticated user holding only read-only privileges on a single searchable index can trigger the condition with one small search request.
AnalysisAI
Denial of service in Elasticsearch allows any authenticated user holding only read-only index privileges to crash a cluster node by submitting a single crafted search request. The intervals query type does not enforce Elasticsearch's configurable input-length restriction, so a deeply nested pattern drives unbounded recursion that exhausts the JVM thread stack and terminates the node process. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires a valid Elasticsearch credential with at minimum read (search) privileges on at least one searchable index - anonymous or unauthenticated access is not sufficient. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H reflects the key risk characteristics accurately: the attack is network-reachable over HTTP, requires no elevated configuration or complex precondition, and produces complete availability impact on the targeted node. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to Elasticsearch 8.19.20 or 9.4.5 as documented in ESA-2026-81 at https://discuss.elastic.co/t/elasticsearch-8-19-20-9-4-5-security-update-esa-2026-81/389501. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
