2DescriptionCVE.org
Elasticsearch does not validate a size value taken from a user-supplied input before that value is used to reserve memory for an internal data structure. An authenticated user holding only read privileges can submit a single small crafted request to a product API endpoint that causes the node to attempt an excessively large allocation. The resulting memory exhaustion raises a fatal error that terminates the Elasticsearch node process, causing a denial of service for the affected node and degrading cluster health. The defect is not volumetric, so a single request is sufficient regardless of the heap size configured on the target node.
AnalysisAI
Memory exhaustion in Elasticsearch allows any authenticated user with only read privileges to crash an Elasticsearch node with a single small crafted API request. The root cause is missing validation of a user-controlled size value that is passed directly to an internal memory reservation routine, enabling uncontrolled heap allocation that terminates the node process and degrades cluster health. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | The attacker must hold valid Elasticsearch credentials with at least read-level privileges on the cluster - unauthenticated exploitation is not possible given the CVSS vector PR:L. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 6.5 (medium) base score with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H accurately characterizes the core exposure: network-reachable, low complexity, no user interaction required, with full availability impact limited to the attacked node. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade Elasticsearch to version 8.19.20, 9.4.5, or 9.5.1, as indicated by the vendor security advisory ESA-2026-80 published at https://discuss.elastic.co/t/elasticsearch-8-19-20-9-4-5-9-5-1-security-update-esa-2026-80/389507. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
