DescriptionCVE.org

ApostropheCMS is an open-source Node.js content management system. In 4.32.0 and earlier, PATCH /api/v1/article/:id accepts the inherited path toString.call and passes it through the utility module to apos.util.set() and apos.util.get(), allowing an authenticated editor to overwrite the shared Object.prototype.toString function's call property and cause a persistent process-wide denial of service until restart.

AnalysisAI

Prototype pollution in ApostropheCMS 4.32.0 and earlier enables an authenticated editor to trigger a persistent, process-wide denial of service via a single PATCH REST API request. By sending { "toString.call": "x" } to PATCH /api/v1/article/:id, the attacker walks the JavaScript prototype chain through apos.util.set() into the shared Object.prototype.toString function object and shadows its call method, breaking every subsequent Object.prototype.toString.call() invocation in Node.js - including those inside the MongoDB driver - until the server process is manually restarted. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires a valid editor-level authenticated session in the ApostropheCMS instance (CVSS PR:L confirmed). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 base score of 7.1 captures the core risk profile: network-accessible (AV:N), low complexity (AC:L), low-privilege authentication required (PR:L), no user interaction (UI:N), high availability impact (VA:H), and low integrity impact (VI:L) with no confidentiality or subsequent-system impact. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker who holds, steals, or socially engineers an editor-level ApostropheCMS account sends one HTTP PATCH request to `/api/v1/article/:id` with the JSON body `{ "toString.call": "x" }`. The `apos.util.set()` function walks the `toString` segment from the plain object to `Object.prototype.toString` - a function shared by the entire Node.js process - and writes the string `"x"` to its `call` property. …
Remediation The upstream fix is present in commit 5a3746aaed49761e171c2cbfe793267c959829fd (https://github.com/apostrophecms/apostrophe/commit/5a3746aaed49761e171c2cbfe793267c959829fd); however, the specific npm package version incorporating this patch is not stated in the available data and was not independently confirmed - organizations should consult the npm registry and the advisory at https://github.com/apostrophecms/apostrophe/security/advisories/GHSA-vmg4-6gfg-83qx for the definitive patched release and upgrade to it immediately. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, restrict PATCH API access to /api/v1/article/:id to trusted administrators only and audit active editor accounts for unauthorized users. …
