Checkmate is an open-source, self-hosted tool designed to track and monitor server hardware, uptime, response times, and incidents in real-time with beautiful visualizations. From 3.5.1 until 3.9.2, an authenticated admin or superadmin can set matchMethod to regex and place a malicious expression in the expectedValue field for advanced HTTP monitor matching. server/src/api/validation/monitorValidation.ts accepts the expression, and server/src/service/network/AdvancedMatcher.ts synchronously evaluates it against an attacker-controlled HTTP response body on the Node.js main event loop without a timeout or worker isolation, allowing catastrophic backtracking to freeze API endpoints, monitor checks, and WebSocket connections for all users. This issue is fixed in version 3.9.2.
AnalysisAI
ReDoS (catastrophic regex backtracking) in Checkmate monitoring platform versions 3.5.1 through 3.9.1 allows an authenticated admin or superadmin to freeze the entire Node.js application for all users by supplying a malicious regular expression in an HTTP monitor's expectedValue field. The vulnerable code in AdvancedMatcher.ts evaluates the regex synchronously on the Node.js main event loop against an attacker-supplied HTTP response body with no timeout or worker isolation, causing complete availability loss. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires an authenticated session with admin or superadmin role within the Checkmate application - these are the only roles permitted to configure monitor settings per the advisory. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | Despite a CVSS base score of only 4.9 (Medium), the availability impact is total - a single admin-crafted regex can render the entire Checkmate instance unresponsive for all users. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade Checkmate to version 3.9.2 or later, confirmed fixed via the GitHub release at https://github.com/bluewave-labs/Checkmate/releases/tag/v3.9.2. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
