MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the target application parse input using the Smile binary dataformat - specifically that attacker-supplied bytes reach SmileFactory parsing directly or via an ObjectMapper configured with the Smile module; applications using only standard JSON parsing are unaffected because jackson-core's JSON parsers enforce maxNameLength incrementally. The affected library must be a 2.16.0-or-later release (earlier releases lack the maxNameLength constraint entirely and are a separate consideration). No authentication is required (PR:N) and the default configuration is vulnerable because StreamReadConstraints.maxNameLength is not enforced for Smile and maxDocumentLength is disabled by default, so the only practical limits are the attacker's upload capacity and available heap. The main limiting factor is simply whether Smile parsing is exposed to untrusted input. |
| Impact | This is a credible but bounded-impact vulnerability. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/C:N/I:N/A:H) is internally consistent with the description: a remote attacker needs only to submit a Smile document to a parsing endpoint, with no privileges or user interaction, and the sole impact is availability (memory exhaustion / DoS) - there is no confidentiality or integrity impact, which correctly caps the severity at 7.5 (High) rather than Critical. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. The vulnerability is NOT in CISA KEV and no public exploit code is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis - meaning there is no evidence of active exploitation. The practical risk is tempered by a key precondition the raw CVSS does not capture: the application must actually parse the Smile binary format (via SmileFactory or an ObjectMapper with the Smile module), which is far less common than default JSON parsing. The signals therefore align rather than conflict: a genuinely network-reachable, unauthenticated, low-complexity DoS, but one whose real-world blast radius depends on Smile being in use. Note the input CPE for jackson-dataformats-binary uses a wildcard version with no fixed-version boundary, so affected/fixed ranges should be verified against GHSA-3v8f-v6vx-fmrm; the description clarifies the constraint (maxNameLength) only exists from jackson-core 2.16.0 onward. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker identifies a service that accepts and deserializes Smile-format input (for example an API endpoint using an ObjectMapper configured with the Smile module). The attacker uploads a single crafted Smile document containing one object property name of enormous length; because SmileParser._handleLongFieldName() grows its buffer via an unconstrained _growArrayTo() and never calls validateNameLength(), the parser buffers the entire name in heap before returning, exhausting memory and causing a denial of service. No public exploit is identified, but the technique is trivial given the described defect. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026
Memory-exhaustion denial of service in FasterXML jackson-dataformats-binary affects the Smile binary parser on 2.16.0-and-later releases, where SmileParser buffers an entire JSON object property name in memory through an unconstrained _growArrayTo() call inside _handleLongFieldName() and never calls StreamReadConstraints.validateNameLength(), so the configured maxNameLength is silently ignored for this format. Any remote, unauthenticated attacker whose bytes reach SmileFactory parsing - directly or through an ObjectMapper configured with the Smile module - can embed a single unbounded property name and force heap exhaustion, because maxDocumentLength is also disabled by default (CVSS 3.1: 7.5, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, availability-only impact), leaving upload capacity and available heap as the only practical limits. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and applications that parse only standard JSON are unaffected since jackson-core's JSON parsers enforce maxNameLength incrementally during name decoding.
RemediationAI
Patch available per vendor advisory; consult GHSA-3v8f-v6vx-fmrm (https://github.com/FasterXML/jackson-dataformats-binary/security/advisories/GHSA-3v8f-v6vx-fmrm), the upstream fix tracker https://github.com/FasterXML/jackson-dataformats-binary/issues/726, and the 2.18 release notes (https://github.com/FasterXML/jackson-dataformats-binary/blob/2.18/release-notes/VERSION-2.x) for the released patched version on your branch, and upgrade jackson-dataformats-binary to that build - note that the released patched version is not independently confirmed from the provided data, so verify against your dependency tree. jackson-core 2.16.0 or later is a prerequisite for the fix to be meaningful, since releases before that lack maxNameLength entirely. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to stop exposing Smile to untrusted input: remove the Smile module from ObjectMappers handling external payloads and restrict accepted content types at the endpoint or gateway to application/json, accepting the trade-off that legitimate Smile clients will break. As a secondary measure, explicitly configure StreamReadConstraints with a finite maxDocumentLength on all parsers - it is disabled by default and would cap total parsed document size, indirectly bounding the name buffer - with the trade-off of rejecting legitimately large payloads; do not rely on maxNameLength, as it is not enforced by this parser. Finally, enforce request body size limits at the reverse proxy or servlet container so oversized uploads are rejected before reaching the parser, and restrict Smile-capable parsing endpoints to trusted or authenticated clients; these limits are coarse and may truncate or reject valid large documents, but they prevent heap exhaustion from a single unbounded field name.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Smile is a binary JSON-compatible data format implemented in FasterXML's jackson-dataformats-binary alongside CBOR, Avro, Ion and Protobuf; because it is content-negotiated rather than JSON-only, applications that accept multiple Jackson-supported formats can be steered into this parser. The root cause is CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling): the SmileParser path for long field names, SmileParser._handleLongFieldName(), repeatedly grows its internal name buffer via _growArrayTo() without any length check, and the parser never invokes StreamReadConstraints.validateNameLength(), the guard that jackson-core's own JSON parsers apply incrementally as each name is decoded. The maxNameLength/validateNameLength constraint set was introduced in jackson-core 2.16.0, so the unenforced check exists only in 2.16.0-and-later trees - earlier releases lack the constraint entirely and are a separate consideration rather than covered by this gap. StreamReadConstraints.maxDocumentLength is disabled by default, so under stock configuration nothing bounds the buffered name other than process memory. The issue is documented in the shared vendor advisory GHSA-3v8f-v6vx-fmrm, which tracks two sibling defects in the same constraint-coverage gap: the Smile parser (issue #726, CVE-2026-68496) and the CBOR parser (issue #725, CVE-2026-68495). Affected artifacts map to CPE cpe:2.3:a:fasterxml:jackson-dataformats-binary:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*.

DescriptionCVE.org
The Smile parser in FasterXML jackson-dataformats-binary never invokes StreamReadConstraints.validateNameLength() when decoding JSON object property names, so the maxNameLength limit is not enforced for this format. SmileParser._handleLongFieldName() grows its internal name buffer through an unconstrained _growArrayTo() call and performs no length validation. An attacker who can have a Smile document parsed may therefore embed a single property name of unbounded length; the parser buffers the whole name in memory before returning it, whatever maxNameLength is configured to. Because StreamReadConstraints.maxDocumentLength is also disabled by default, nothing else bounds the name under default settings, so the only limits are the attacker's upload capacity and available heap, leading to memory exhaustion and denial of service. No privileges beyond the ability to submit data to a parsing endpoint are required, and exploitation needs only that the bytes reach SmileFactory parsing, directly or through an ObjectMapper configured with the Smile module. jackson-core's own JSON parsers enforce maxNameLength incrementally during name decoding; this gap is specific to the binary formats. maxNameLength and validateNameLength were introduced in jackson-core 2.16.0, so releases before 2.16.0 do not contain the constraint that is left unenforced. This issue is tracked together with the CBOR parser defect in the same vendor advisory, GHSA-3v8f-v6vx-fmrm, which covers both binary formats. The Smile parser defect (jackson-dataformats-binary issue #726) is CVE-2026-68496; the CBOR parser defect (issue #725) is assigned CVE-2026-68495.

Executive ViewAI
FasterXML's jackson-dataformats-binary library, which Java services use to parse Smile binary payloads, can be driven into heap exhaustion by a single oversized property name on releases 2.16.0 and later, taking the consuming service offline. Any internet- or partner-facing application that accepts Smile-encoded input, whether directly or through an ObjectMapper with the Smile module registered, is exposed without requiring credentials or user interaction; standard JSON-only parsing paths are unaffected. Leadership should treat this as a service-availability and revenue-continuity risk rather than a data-breach risk.
