| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires all of the following: the Shovel plugin must be enabled AND at least one AMQP 1.0 shovel must be configured using credentials embedded directly in the connection URI (the AMQP 0-9-1 shovel is unaffected because it strips credentials via amqp_uri:remove_credentials before storage). Reading the exposed credential requires an authenticated account holding the 'monitoring' management tag, accessing GET /api/shovels or running rabbitmqctl shovel_status. Limiting factors: it is a passive read-only disclosure with no integrity/availability impact; the non-default URI-embedded-credential configuration and the monitoring-tag authentication requirement both narrow the exploitable population; brokers that reference shovel credentials indirectly (not embedded in the URI) are not affected. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but modest-priority information-disclosure issue, not a high-urgency flaw. The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.9 (MEDIUM) with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:H/UI:N and confidentiality-only impact (VC:H, VI:N, VA:N) - meaning the only consequence is exposure of a stored credential, no integrity or availability effect. Multiple signals point to constrained real-world risk: the AT:P (Attack Requirements: Present) metric reflects that a specific non-default configuration must exist (Shovel plugin enabled with AMQP 1.0 shovels defined using URI-embedded credentials), and reading the exposed data requires an authenticated user holding the monitoring management tag. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code in the provided data, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - this is not evidence of active exploitation. The CWE-312 (cleartext storage) classification and description are internally consistent with the confidentiality-only vector. One caveat worth verifying: the vendor sets PR:H, but the described precondition is merely the 'monitoring' tag, which is a mid-tier read-oriented management privilege rather than full administrator - this leans toward PR:L, and I have assessed it as such below. No data is missing that changes the overall MEDIUM classification, but note the exposed password is that of the shovel's upstream/downstream broker connection, so blast radius depends on what that credential grants. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated RabbitMQ user with the monitoring tag (e.g. a low-trust operator or a compromised monitoring service account) queries GET /api/shovels or runs rabbitmqctl shovel_status on a broker where an AMQP 1.0 shovel was configured with credentials embedded in its connection URI. The raw URI is returned including the plaintext password, handing the attacker the remote broker's connection credentials. No public exploit code is required or noted; the exposure is a simple authenticated API read against a susceptible configuration. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 23, 2026
RabbitMQ's Shovel plugin leaks broker credentials on deployments that configure AMQP 1.0 shovels with the username and password embedded directly in the connection URI: in versions prior to 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, and 4.3.0 the plugin persists the raw URI instead of sanitizing it the way the AMQP 0-9-1 shovel does via amqp_uri:remove_credentials. Any authenticated user holding the 'monitoring' management tag can read those plaintext credentials from GET /api/shovels or rabbitmqctl shovel_status, and can then reuse them against the remote AMQP 1.0 endpoint. There is no public exploit code identified at time of analysis and no confirmed active exploitation (no CISA KEV listing); the exposure is a passive, read-only credential disclosure whose practical severity is narrowed by the non-default URI-embedded-credential configuration and the monitoring-tag requirement. This is a genuine but modest-priority information-disclosure issue rather than a high-urgency flaw.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor patch by upgrading to RabbitMQ 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, or 4.3.0 as appropriate for your release series (vendor-released patch: 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, 4.3.0), following GHSA-x5h5-588r-cv55 and the 4.2.6 release notes. Because the credential was already written to shovel state on vulnerable nodes, upgrading alone does not undo the exposure: rotate the credentials used by any AMQP 1.0 shovel after patching, replace URI-embedded credentials with indirect credential references (environment/configuration-driven credentials rather than inline amqp://user:pass@host URIs) so passwords are never materialized in shovel state, and audit the management API and CLI access logs for reads of /api/shovels or shovel_status. As a compensating control where patching is delayed, remove the 'monitoring' tag from all accounts that do not strictly need it and restrict access to the management HTTP listener and rabbitmqctl to trusted operators - trade-off: this removes legitimate observability and can block monitoring integrations that rely on the same API. Disabling the Shovel plugin entirely eliminates the exposure but stops all shovel-based message replication, so it is only viable on brokers that do not depend on shovels.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a cleartext storage of sensitive information issue (CWE-312) in the RabbitMQ Shovel plugin, which replicates messages between brokers. RabbitMQ's AMQP 0-9-1 shovel implementation passes its connection URI through amqp_uri:remove_credentials before the URI is persisted in shovel state, so passwords never enter the stored configuration. The AMQP 1.0 shovel code path bypasses that sanitization and stores the raw amqp:// URI verbatim in the node's shovel state. Because that state is rendered by the HTTP management API (GET /api/shovels) and by the CLI (rabbitmqctl shovel_status), an account carrying the 'monitoring' management tag - a role intended only for observability - receives the plaintext password. Affected software is the RabbitMQ server (CPE cpe:2.3:a:rabbitmq:rabbitmq-server:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), with the Erlang/OTP runtime hosting the shovel plugin and the rabbitmq_management plugin exposing the status endpoint. The independent assessment scores this CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N: network-reachable, high attack complexity because of the configuration preconditions, authenticated but low-privilege, confidentiality-only impact with no integrity or availability effect.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
RabbitMQ is a messaging and streaming broker. Prior to versions 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, and 4.3.0, The AMQP 0-9-1 shovel calls amqp_uri:remove_credentials before storing its connection URI, but the AMQP 1.0 shovel stores the raw URI including the password. The stored URI is visible via GET /api/shovels and via rabbitmqctl shovel_status. Preconditions include The Shovel plugin must be in use with AMQP 1.0 shovels configured using URI-embedded credentials. Reading the exposed status requires the monitoring tag.. This issue is fixed in versions 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, and 4.3.0.
