DescriptionCVE.org

Authentication Bypass by Capture-replay vulnerability in Apache Tomcat's DIGEST authenticator. If, before windowSize requests have been made, a client makes a DIGEST authenticated request with a nonceCount on the upper boundary of the replay window then that request is replayable once only while the associated nonceCount remains within the replay window.

This issue affects Apache Tomcat: from 11.0.0-M1 through 11.0.24, from 10.1.0-M1 through 10.1.57, from 9.0.0.M1 through 9.0.120.

The following versions were EOL at the time the CVE was created but are known to be affected: from 8.5.0 through 8.5.100, from 7.0.30 through 7.0.109. Other unsupported versions may also be affected.

Users are recommended to upgrade to version 11.0.25, 10.1.58 or 9.0.121, which fix the issue.

AnalysisAI

Authentication bypass in Apache Tomcat's DIGEST authenticator lets a network attacker who has captured a valid DIGEST-authenticated request replay it once when its nonceCount sits on the upper boundary of the replay window and fewer than windowSize requests have since been made. It affects Tomcat 11.0.0-M1 through 11.0.24, 10.1.0-M1 through 10.1.57, 9.0.0.M1 through 9.0.120, plus EOL 8.5.x and 7.0.x branches, but only where DIGEST authentication is actually enabled. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Requires the DIGEST authenticator to be explicitly configured on the Tomcat Realm (not the default) AND the attacker to already hold a captured, valid DIGEST-authenticated request. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The signals conflict sharply. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Apache Tomcat 11.0.25, 10.1.58, or 9.0.121, which fix the replay-window handling. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, identify all systems running Tomcat 7.0.x, 8.5.x, 9.0.0 through 9.0.120, 10.1.0 through 10.1.57, or 11.0.0 through 11.0.24, and determine which have DIGEST authentication explicitly enabled. …
