DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw was found in libcupsfilters. The cfIEEE1284NormalizeMakeModel() function enters an infinite loop when processing a printer-advertised IEEE-1284 device ID with an empty model field, causing sustained CPU consumption. A network-adjacent attacker could exploit this by broadcasting a specially crafted printer advertisement, leading to denial of service.

AnalysisAI

Denial of service in OpenPrinting libcupsfilters (as shipped in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 through 10) allows a network-adjacent attacker to pin a CPU at 100% by broadcasting a crafted printer advertisement. The flaw lies in cfIEEE1284NormalizeMakeModel(), which enters an infinite loop (CWE-835) when parsing an IEEE-1284 device ID whose model field is empty. …

cfIEEE1284NormalizeMakeModel() enters infinite loop
Impact
Sustained CPU exhaustion denies printing service

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The concrete prerequisite is that a target host running libcupsfilters ingests a printer-advertised IEEE-1284 device ID in which the model (MDL) field is empty - that malformed, attacker-controlled advertisement IS the trigger, requiring no authentication and no user interaction (PR:N/UI:N). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The published CVSS 3.1 vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H yields 7.5 (High) and reflects a pure availability impact - no confidentiality or integrity loss. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker who has gained a foothold on the local network segment (for example a compromised workstation or IoT device) broadcasts a spoofed printer advertisement containing an IEEE-1284 device ID with an empty model field. When a nearby CUPS-based host processes the advertisement, cfIEEE1284NormalizeMakeModel() spins in an infinite loop and saturates a CPU, degrading or denying the printing service. …
Remediation Upstream fix available (OpenPrinting GHSA-rcq7-rv5g-j3r4); a released patched version was not independently confirmed from the provided data, so apply the updated libcupsfilters package for your RHEL stream as soon as Red Hat publishes it and track https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-64611 for the exact errata version. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all RHEL 7-10 systems running libcupsfilters and identify those with printer discovery enabled on untrusted networks; immediately disable or restrict mDNS/DNS-SD printer auto-discovery services if operationally feasible. …
