AnalysisAI

Kernel panic (BUG) in the Linux netfs subsystem's netfs_write_begin() function causes local denial of service when a folio is unlocked without holding the lock, triggering the VM_BUG_ON_FOLIO(!folio_test_locked(folio)) assertion at mm/filemap.c:1504. The defect surfaces under concurrent write workloads on Ceph-backed filesystems using the netfs layer - the generic/013 xfstests case reproduces it with approximately 30% probability per run. A local, low-privileged user who can write to a Ceph mount can crash the kernel; no confidentiality or integrity impact is observed. No public exploit code exists and EPSS stands at 0.17% (6th percentile), consistent with a race-condition DoS confined to specific filesystem configurations.

Technical ContextAI

The Linux netfs layer (net/fs/write_begin.c) provides a generic write-begin path reused by network filesystems such as Ceph. During write operations the path acquires a folio lock, but a race condition allows netfs_write_begin() to reach folio_unlock() on a folio that is not actually locked - violating the kernel's mandatory invariant enforced by VM_BUG_ON_FOLIO(!folio_test_locked(folio)) in mm/filemap.c line 1504. The kernel then BUGs with an invalid-opcode trap (#UD, Oops code 0000). The CWE field is listed as N/A, but the root cause is a concurrency/locking defect (conceptually CWE-667, Improper Locking). Affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux across the 6.12, 6.18, and 7.0 stable branches up to the respective fix commits.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is to update to a patched Linux kernel version: 6.12.92 or later for the 6.12.x stable series, 6.18.34 or later for the 6.18.x series, 7.0.11 or later for the 7.0.x series, or any 7.1+ mainline build containing commit dc7832d05deb4d632e8035e3299e31a3528fa0d0. Kernel.org stable patches are at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/51ffb788f074c0a61953086f49008028c1e7b645 (6.12), https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/b63971238beb79cf701dac33c6cefc56c07c89fa (6.18), and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/5ad05b6f5df296ef046589f222bb2587495b991e (7.0). Ubuntu users should apply USN-8593-1 packages via apt. Until patching is possible, operators can mitigate by restricting local user write access to Ceph-mounted filesystems (e.g., via filesystem ACLs or limiting which users can mount Ceph volumes), accepting the trade-off of reduced functionality for affected workloads. There is no configuration knob to disable the netfs write path selectively without removing Ceph write capability entirely.
