| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim application to clone from a malicious or man-in-the-middle-controlled remote that advertises circular symref= capabilities (e.g. refs/remotes/origin/a pointing to b and b pointing back to a) using isomorphic-git version 1.38.5 or earlier. No authentication is required on the attacker's remote (PR:N), but the attack is gated on victim-initiated user interaction: the victim must choose to clone from the untrusted/compromised remote (UI:R). After that single clone, the trigger fires on any subsequent operation that resolves the poisoned refs - log, status, checkout, or branch. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: applications that only clone from trusted remotes over authenticated/verified transport are not exposed; the flaw is a denial of service only (no data exposure or code execution); and upgrading to 1.38.6 - which adds cycle detection / a default depth limit in GitRefManager.resolve() - is the fix. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-to-moderate priority issue whose signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, base 4.3) correctly reflects a network-reachable but user-interaction-gated flaw with only limited availability impact and no confidentiality or integrity exposure - the worst outcome is a bricked repository for the consuming application, not host compromise. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', not act_now or emergency, consistent with the modest severity. It is NOT in CISA KEV and no EPSS score was supplied, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. A public PoC reference exists (spiceoverflow/av5-circular-symref) but it is not verified in the input as working exploit code; even taken at face value it demonstrates a hang, not code execution. The one caveat for defenders: the impact is persistent - once the circular refs are on disk the repository stays unusable until manually cleaned - so while the raw score is low, the effect is more than a transient crash. Net: a real, confirmed defect worth patching on a normal cycle, but not a drop-everything emergency, and its exploitation depends entirely on a victim choosing to clone from an attacker-controlled or MitM'd remote. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker stands up (or MitM-intercepts) a Git remote that advertises circular symref= capabilities such as refs/remotes/origin/a → b and b → a. When a victim application clones from that remote using isomorphic-git ≤ 1.38.5, the circular loose symrefs are written to disk, and the next operation that resolves them - log, status, checkout, or branch - loops forever, leaving the repository permanently unusable. A public PoC reference exists (spiceoverflow/av5-circular-symref); it is not verified as working exploit code, though its runner reportedly confirms the non-terminating resolution. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026
Non-terminating symbolic-reference resolution in isomorphic-git 1.38.5 and earlier lets a malicious or man-in-the-middle-controlled Git remote brick a client repository: circular symref= capabilities advertised by the server are persisted to disk by updateRemoteRefs, and any later operation that resolves refs/remotes/origin/a or refs/remotes/origin/b (log, status, checkout, branch) hangs indefinitely. The attack is gated on the victim choosing to clone from the untrusted or compromised remote (UI:R, PR:N), and the result is a persistent denial of service only - no data exposure or code execution (CVSS 3.1 base 4.3, A:L). No CISA KEV entry or confirmed in-the-wild exploitation is reported; the GHSA advisory references a public proof-of-concept repository demonstrating the hang, which is a PoC reference rather than exploit code independently verified as working.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to isomorphic-git v1.38.6, the vendor-released patch, which adds cycle detection and/or a default maximum depth in GitRefManager.resolve() so circular symrefs terminate instead of looping; the release is published at https://github.com/isomorphic-git/isomorphic-git/releases/tag/v1.38.6 and the fix is visible in PR https://github.com/isomorphic-git/isomorphic-git/pull/2370 (advisory: https://github.com/isomorphic-git/isomorphic-git/security/advisories/GHSA-96wc-2m84-2cj7). Until the upgrade is deployed, restrict cloning to trusted remotes reached over authenticated/verified transport, since the flaw only triggers on a clone from a malicious or MitM-controlled server; note this is a deployment-level restriction and does not sanitize refs once a hostile clone has occurred. For repositories already cloned from an untrusted source, inspect the loose files under .git/refs/remotes/origin/ for entries whose contents begin with 'ref: ' and point at one another, and delete the poisoned remote refs before running any ref-resolving operation, with the trade-off that remote-tracking state is lost and must be re-fetched from a trusted remote. Running ref-resolving operations (log, status, checkout, branch) under an external timeout prevents a hang from pinning a worker indefinitely, but it is a containment measure that leaves the repository unusable for the application rather than a fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
isomorphic-git is a pure-JavaScript Git implementation for Node.js and browsers, so it implements ref resolution itself rather than delegating to libgit2 or the git binary. In src/managers/GitRefManager.js, resolve() only enforces a recursion limit when a caller explicitly passes a depth argument (the default is depth = undefined) and maintains no visited set, so symbolic refs that point at each other recurse without bound (CWE-674 uncontrolled recursion, tracked in the advisory alongside CWE-835 loop with unreachable exit condition). updateRemoteRefs persists every server-supplied symref= capability unconditionally, which means a clone from a hostile remote writes loose symbolic refs such as refs/remotes/origin/a -> ref: refs/remotes/origin/b and b -> a into the local .git directory; because those files survive on disk, the hang recurs on every subsequent ref-resolving operation rather than being a one-off network event. Canonical git diverges here: refs.c caps symref resolution at SYMREF_MAXDEPTH = 5, so git rev-parse on the same refs returns immediately with 'warning: ignoring dangling symref'. The vulnerability is a robustness gap in a client-side protocol implementation handling untrusted remote-advertised capabilities, not a memory-safety flaw.

1DescriptionCVE.org
isomorphic-git is a pure JavaScript implementation of Git for Node.js and browsers. Prior to 1.38.6, isomorphic-git persists server-supplied circular symref= capabilities through updateRemoteRefs, and GitRefManager.resolve() follows the resulting loose symbolic references without a default depth limit or cycle detection. After a clone from a malicious or man-in-the-middle-controlled remote, operations such as log, status, checkout, and branch that resolve refs/remotes/origin/a or refs/remotes/origin/b do not terminate. The circular references remain on disk, leaving the repository unusable for the application and causing a persistent denial of service. This issue is fixed in version 1.38.6.
