DescriptionCVE.org

OpenEXR is the reference implementation and specification for the EXR image format, widely used in the motion picture industry. OpenEXR versions before 3.2.11, 3.3.0 through 3.3.12, and 3.4.0 through 3.4.13 can return an out-of-bounds pointer from TypedDeepImageChannel::row() when a crafted deep EXR has a nonzero dataWindow origin. This vulnerability occurs because the API combines zero-based row access with an absolute-coordinate-adjusted base pointer, allowing a crash or limited information disclosure. This issue is fixed in versions 3.2.11, 3.3.13, and 3.4.14.

AnalysisAI

Out-of-bounds pointer arithmetic in OpenEXR's TypedDeepImageChannel::row() - and parallel methods in FlatImageChannel and SampleCountChannel - affects all releases before 3.2.11, 3.3.13, and 3.4.14, exposing applications that process deep EXR files with nonzero dataWindow origins to deterministic crash or limited heap memory disclosure. The CVSS 7.1 score (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R) reflects unauthenticated, low-complexity delivery of a crafted image file requiring only that a user or pipeline opens it, with high availability impact and limited confidentiality exposure. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires three concurrent conditions: the target application must use the OpenEXRUtil API's row() method on a deep or flat image channel (not merely the core OpenEXR I/O layer); the processed EXR file must specify a nonzero dataWindow origin, which is a valid EXR format configuration but not the most common default; and a user or automated process must open or ingest the crafted file (confirmed by UI:R in the CVSS vector). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 7.1 rating accurately reflects the primary risk profile: no authentication is required, attack complexity is low, but user interaction - opening a crafted EXR file - is a hard prerequisite per UI:R, ruling out fully automated exploitation without social engineering or pipeline infiltration. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation The primary remediation is to upgrade to OpenEXR 3.2.11, 3.3.13, or 3.4.14, which contain corrected pointer arithmetic across all three affected headers (confirmed in commits 37f03b6, 55b7958, aef02224). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, conduct inventory scan to identify all systems running OpenEXR prior to version 3.2.11, 3.3.13, or 3.4.14, prioritizing visual effects studios, media processing services, and systems handling external image sources. …
