Network-delivered markdown is the common attack surface; AC:H reflects the Include plugin dependency; the library enforces no authentication; impact is read-only file disclosure with no integrity or availability consequence.

DescriptionCVE.org

Mistune is a Python Markdown parser with renderers and plugins. Prior to 3.3.0, Include.parse() joins and normalizes user-supplied include paths without verifying that the result remains within the intended markdown directory, allowing crafted include paths to access files outside that directory when markdown files are processed using md.read(). This issue is fixed in version 3.3.0.

AnalysisAI

Path traversal in Mistune's Include plugin allows reading arbitrary files from the server filesystem when processing attacker-controlled markdown. Applications using md.read() with the Include plugin on markdown content supplied by external users are exposed: a crafted include directive can escape the intended markdown base directory to access any file readable by the running process. …

Impact

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires three concurrent conditions: (1) the target application uses Mistune's Include plugin and calls md.read() on the processed markdown, (2) the markdown content or specifically the include directive within it is controllable by an external or untrusted party, and (3) the process running Mistune has read permissions on the target file outside the markdown base directory. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 score of 5.9 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) reflects high confidentiality impact tempered by high attack complexity, since exploitation requires the Include plugin to be active and user-supplied markdown to reach md.read(). … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker submits a markdown document containing a crafted include directive such as referencing ../../etc/passwd to a web application that processes user-supplied markdown with Mistune's Include plugin via md.read(). Include.parse() normalizes the path but does not verify the result remains within the markdown base directory, so the traversal sequence resolves to an arbitrary filesystem location readable by the application process. …
Remediation Upgrade Mistune to version 3.3.0 or later, which resolves the path traversal by adding bounds checking after path normalization in Include.parse(); the release is available at https://github.com/lepture/mistune/releases/tag/v3.3.0 and the fix commit is https://github.com/lepture/mistune/commit/1bef343ade163fc3bb95572b15be720084cdb993. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
