DescriptionCVE.org

pyasn1 is a generic ASN.1 library for Python. Prior to 0.6.4, the BER, CER, and DER decoders process OBJECT IDENTIFIER and RELATIVE-OID values in quadratic time relative to the number of arcs, so a small crafted payload containing an OID with many arcs consumes excessive CPU per decode() call and can deny service to applications that decode untrusted ASN.1 data. The corresponding encoders have the same quadratic behavior when an application re-encodes previously decoded attacker-supplied values. This issue is fixed in version 0.6.4.

AnalysisAI

Denial of service in the pyasn1 Python ASN.1 library (all versions prior to 0.6.4) allows remote attackers to exhaust CPU by submitting a small crafted OBJECT IDENTIFIER or RELATIVE-OID whose arcs are decoded in quadratic time, so any application that calls decode() on untrusted ASN.1 data can be stalled per call; re-encoding such values triggers the same blow-up. Rated CVSS 7.5 (availability-only) with no confidentiality or integrity impact; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, though the fix commit ships a regression test that effectively demonstrates the trigger. As a foundational dependency behind LDAP, SNMP, X.509/PKI and crypto tooling across the Python ecosystem, its broad transitive reach makes this notable despite the modest severity.

Technical ContextAI

pyasn1 implements the ASN.1 BER/CER/DER codecs used to parse and emit binary structures for protocols such as LDAP, SNMP, Kerberos, and X.509 certificates. The root cause is CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption): in ber/decoder.py the OID and RELATIVE-OID value decoders accumulated arcs into an immutable Python tuple using repeated 'oid += (subId,)' concatenation, and the ber/encoder.py path built output octets the same way. Because each concatenation copies the entire growing tuple, appending N arcs costs O(N^2) work; a payload with thousands of single-byte arcs therefore consumes CPU disproportionate to its size. The 0.6.4 fix replaces tuple concatenation with mutable list append/extend and only converts to a tuple once at the end (yielding tuple(oid)), reducing decode/encode to linear time. The affected package is identified by cpe:2.3:a:pyasn1:pyasn1:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* with all versions below 0.6.4 in scope.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade pyasn1 to version 0.6.4 or later (pip install --upgrade 'pyasn1>=0.6.4'), and update any downstream packages or lockfiles that transitively pin an older pyasn1; see the advisory at https://github.com/pyasn1/pyasn1/security/advisories/GHSA-8ppf-4f7h-5ppj and release https://github.com/pyasn1/pyasn1/releases/tag/v0.6.4. If immediate upgrade is not possible, apply compensating controls on any code path that decodes untrusted ASN.1: cap the maximum accepted payload/BER length before calling decoder.decode() so oversized OID-heavy blobs are rejected early (trade-off: may reject legitimate large but valid structures), enforce a per-request CPU/wall-clock timeout or run decoding in a bounded worker so a single slow decode cannot pin a process, and restrict or authenticate the exposed endpoints that accept ASN.1 input (e.g., LDAP/SNMP/certificate parsers) to reduce untrusted exposure. Avoid re-encoding attacker-supplied decoded values on vulnerable versions, since the encoder shares the same quadratic behavior.
