AC:H because the flaw is only reachable when an application converts untrusted input using one of four uncommon encodings; PR:N/UI:N as the bug itself needs no auth, with full memory-corruption impact.

DescriptionCVE.org

Several encoding modules, including HZ, UTF-7, VIQR, and ZW, did not properly check the size of the caller-supplied output buffer before writing converted characters.

An application that uses iconv(3) to convert untrusted input to or from one of the affected encodings may be vulnerable to buffer overflows if it uses one of the affected encoding modules.

AnalysisAI

Heap buffer overflows in FreeBSD's iconv(3) character-conversion library allow attackers who control input processed through the HZ, UTF-7, VIQR, or ZW encoding modules to corrupt heap memory, potentially leading to remote code execution. Applications on FreeBSD 14.3/14.4/15.0/15.1 that pass untrusted data through iconv using any of these encodings are exposed. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires that a target application on an affected FreeBSD release actually calls iconv(3) to convert attacker-influenced data using one of exactly four encoding modules - HZ, UTF-7, VIQR, or ZW; conversions using any other encoding are not affected. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment Signals conflict and must be weighed carefully. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Apply the FreeBSD security patch for your release: update to 14.3-RELEASE-p16, 14.4-RELEASE-p7, 15.0-RELEASE-p11, or 15.1-RELEASE-p1 (or later) via freebsd-update, then restart or rebuild applications that link against libc/iconv so they pick up the fixed module code. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, conduct an inventory of all FreeBSD systems running versions 14.3, 14.4, 15.0, or 15.1 and determine which applications process untrusted data through iconv with the affected encodings (HZ, UTF-7, VIQR, ZW). …
