Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that an SSH channel has already been established between the victim application and the malicious peer - this means the SSH transport and, for server-side exploitation, authentication must have completed. In the client-attack scenario (malicious server targeting a vulnerable client), the attacker needs no credentials; the connecting client only needs to reach the attacker-controlled server and complete the key exchange. In the server-attack scenario (malicious client targeting a vulnerable server), the attacker must first authenticate to the server, limiting exploitation to credential holders or misconfigured servers permitting anonymous access. The vulnerability is not configuration-dependent beyond the library being used for SSH - it triggers against the default message-handling path. Impact is limited to availability (connection deadlock); no elevation of privilege or data disclosure is possible through this path alone.

Impact

CVSS 7.5 with AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H reflects the worst-case scenario: an attacker operating a malicious SSH server can deadlock any connecting client using the vulnerable library without requiring authentication on the attacker's side. When exploitation flows the other direction - an attacker as SSH client against a vulnerable server - some level of authentication is typically required, which would raise effective AC and PR. EPSS stands at 0.17% (7th percentile), indicating low predicted exploitation probability in the short term. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public POC at time of analysis. The library is foundational to large swaths of the Go ecosystem (Kubernetes, many cloud-native tools), meaning the blast radius from widespread exploitation would be high even though the probability signal is currently low. The impact is purely availability - no confidentiality or integrity compromise. Overall this is a real operational risk for internet-facing Go SSH servers and clients, justified by the large deployment footprint, but not an emergency given the absence of active exploitation and the straightforward upgrade path.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker stands up a malicious SSH server and advertises it at a network location reachable by a victim application using a vulnerable version of golang.org/x/crypto/ssh. When the victim client connects and a channel is established, the malicious server sends a crafted sequence of RFC 4254 channel messages containing unrecognised types. The client library buffers these messages indefinitely, causing the connection goroutine to deadlock, rendering the connection permanently unavailable and potentially starving the application of SSH connectivity.

AnalysisAIv2 – Sep 03, 2026

Denial-of-service in the Go extended cryptography library's SSH package allows a malicious peer to deadlock an entire SSH connection by sending crafted RFC 4254 channel messages after a channel is established. All versions of golang.org/x/crypto/ssh below 0.56.0 are affected; the flaw manifests because unrecognized channel messages were buffered and allowed to block rather than being rejected as protocol errors. No public exploit or active exploitation has been identified, but the attack requires no privileges in the worst-case client scenario where a malicious SSH server targets a connecting client.

Earlier versions of this analysis (1)
v1 Sep 02, 2026 - 20:16

Denial-of-service via deadlock in the SSH channel handler of golang.org/x/crypto affects all versions prior to v0.56.0. After an SSH channel has been established, a malicious remote peer can send crafted RFC 4254 channel messages - including unhandled message types or global requests - that cause the entire SSH connection's goroutine to deadlock indefinitely, effectively killing the connection without recovery. Any Go application using golang.org/x/crypto's ssh package as a server or client is exposed; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade golang.org/x/crypto to version 0.56.0 or later - the upstream fix is tracked at go.dev/cl/826524 and go.dev/issue/81316 and 81317. In Go module projects, run 'go get golang.org/x/crypto@v0.56.0' followed by 'go mod tidy' and rebuild all binaries. Applications that embed SSH servers should additionally review whether they can restrict which peers may connect (firewall rules, VPC boundaries, IP allowlists) to reduce the attack surface while upgrades are deployed - this has no functional side effect on legitimate access patterns. For client-side exposure, avoid connecting to untrusted SSH servers using vulnerable library versions; this is the highest-risk scenario since no authentication is required of the attacker. No workaround substitutes for the patch, as the deadlock is triggered at the protocol message-handling layer with no application-level interception point.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability resides in golang.org/x/crypto/ssh, Go's extended cryptography module implementing the Secure Shell protocol. RFC 4254 defines the SSH connection protocol, which multiplexes sessions over an authenticated transport via channels. The affected code path failed to handle the full set of valid RFC 4254 channel message types and global requests explicitly; any unrecognised message type was buffered indefinitely, causing goroutine or channel deadlock. CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling) is the root cause class - the library allocated unbounded buffer space for unexpected messages rather than enforcing protocol discipline by tearing down the connection. The affected CPE is golang.org/x/crypto/ssh versions 0 through 0.55.x.

Why It Matters

A denial-of-service vulnerability in golang.org/x/crypto/ssh (all versions before 0.56.0) enables a malicious SSH server to deadlock client connections indefinitely by sending crafted protocol messages. Organizations using this Go library for SSH-based remote access, CI/CD automation, or infrastructure management face potential service disruption and operational downtime if their applications are running affected versions.
