DescriptionNVD
Wagtail is an open source content management system built on Django. In versions prior to 7.0.8, 7.3.3 and 7.4.2, an authenticated admin user can trigger expensive rendition processing with purposefully crafted filter specs resulting in potentially service degradation. The vulnerability is not exploitable by an ordinary site visitor without access to the Wagtail admin. This issue has been fixed in versions 7.0.8, 7.3.3, and 7.4.2.
AnalysisAI
Wagtail CMS versions prior to 7.0.8, 7.3.3, and 7.4.2 expose a resource exhaustion vector where authenticated admin users can submit purposefully crafted image filter specification strings that trigger disproportionately expensive rendition processing on the server, resulting in service degradation for all site users. The vulnerability is constrained to admin-level authenticated users and cannot be triggered by ordinary unauthenticated site visitors, materially limiting real-world attack surface. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires an active authenticated session with Wagtail admin-level access - the CVE description explicitly states the vulnerability 'is not exploitable by an ordinary site visitor without access to the Wagtail admin.' The attacker must be able to submit image filter specifications to the rendition processing system, meaning the Wagtail image management feature must be in use on the target installation. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The NVD-assigned CVSS 3.1 score of 4.3 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L reflects a network-accessible, low-complexity, availability-only issue requiring authenticated access. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An authenticated Wagtail admin user - whether a malicious insider or an attacker who has compromised admin credentials - submits a series of purposefully crafted image filter specification strings via the Wagtail admin interface. The server processes each request by executing computationally expensive rendition operations, consuming disproportionate CPU or memory resources and progressively degrading response times for all site visitors. … |
| Remediation | Upgrade to Wagtail 7.0.8, 7.3.3, or 7.4.2 according to your active release branch; these versions are confirmed by the vendor advisory at https://github.com/wagtail/wagtail/security/advisories/GHSA-f2p5-j6fg-5cxf as containing the fix. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
