Two-factor authentication takeover in LibreChat before 0.8.4-rc1 lets any authenticated user — or an attacker wielding a stolen session token — call the GET /api/auth/2fa/enable endpoint to silently overwrite an account's existing TOTP secret, regenerate backup codes, and flip twoFactorEnabled to false, all without TOTP or backup-code verification. The flaw destroys the victim's working second factor and can lock the legitimate owner out of their own 2FA. Publicly available exploit code exists (SSVC: PoC), but EPSS is low (0.18%, 8th percentile) and it is not listed in CISA KEV.

Two-factor authentication takeover in LibreChat before 0.8.4-rc1 lets any authenticated user - or an attacker holding a stolen session token - call GET /api/auth/2fa/enable to silently overwrite a victim's existing TOTP secret, regenerate backup codes, and flip twoFactorEnabled to false, all without supplying any TOTP code or backup code. The flaw, an authentication bypass tied to a missing verification check on an already-2FA-enabled account, has a published vendor security advisory (GHSA-45fp-6q26-wfgq) but no public exploit identified at time of analysis and a low EPSS of 0.18%. CISA SSVC classifies exploitation as proof-of-concept stage with partial technical impact.
Two-factor authentication takeover in LibreChat prior to 0.8.4-rc1 allows an authenticated attacker holding a stolen session token to silently displace a victim's TOTP secret by calling GET /api/auth/2fa/enable - an endpoint that re-initializes 2FA enrollment without verifying the existing authenticator. The endpoint overwrites the TOTP secret, regenerates backup codes, and sets twoFactorEnabled to false, all in a single unauthenticated-to-2FA request, effectively locking the legitimate account owner out of their configured authenticator. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing exists at time of analysis; the fix is confirmed in 0.8.4-rc1.

LibreChat is an enhanced ChatGPT clone that supports multiple AI providers. Prior to 0.8.4-rc1, the GET /api/auth/2fa/enable endpoint can be called by an authenticated user (or attacker with a stolen session) even when 2FA is already fully enabled on the account. This endpoint overwrites the existing TOTP secret, generates new backup codes, and sets twoFactorEnabled to false - all without requiring any TOTP or backup code verification. An attacker with a valid session token can completely take over a victim's 2FA, locking the legitimate user out of their own two-factor authentication. This vulnerability is fixed in 0.8.4-rc1.
Executive ViewAI
LibreChat versions before 0.8.4-rc1 contain a critical two-factor authentication bypass that allows any authenticated user to silently disable another user's 2FA protection; publicly available exploit code exists. This vulnerability exposes organizations to account takeover and compliance risk by directly undermining multi-factor authentication controls. Immediate patching is essential to restore 2FA integrity across all user accounts.
Within 24 hours: Inventory all LibreChat instances and identify versions running before 0.8.4-rc1. Within 7 days: Test LibreChat 0.8.4-rc1 or later in staging environment and validate 2FA functionality remains intact after patch. Within 30 days: Deploy patched version to all production systems and confirm 2FA protection is restored for all user accounts.
Apply vendor patch.
