Ground Station prior to 0.6.0 contains an unauthenticated denial-of-service vulnerability in the Socket.IO server's service_control event handler that allows any unauthenticated network peer to forcibly terminate the ground-station process by sending a single restart_service command. Attackers can connect to the Socket.IO server on port 7000 without credentials due to disabled authentication enforcement and a wildcard CORS policy, then emit the service_control event to terminate all active satellite-tracking sessions, SDR recording pipelines, demodulators, decoders, and rotator controllers, with repeated triggering possible in Docker deployments to create a persistent denial-of-service condition.

Unauthenticated denial-of-service in sgoudelis/Ground Station prior to 0.6.0 allows any network peer to forcibly terminate the application process by emitting a single Socket.IO event requiring no credentials. Authentication enforcement is disabled and a wildcard CORS policy is in place, exposing the service_control handler - which triggers process shutdown via a restart_service command - to any host with TCP access to port 7000. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires TCP network access to port 7000 on the Ground Station host; no credentials are required because authentication enforcement is explicitly disabled in affected versions and the wildcard CORS policy imposes no additional barrier. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N, score 8.7) is consistent with the described attack: trivially reachable over the network, no complexity, no credentials, immediate high availability impact, and no scope change to other systems. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An attacker with TCP access to port 7000 instantiates a Socket.IO client (using any standard library such as python-socketio or socket.io-client), connects to the Ground Station backend without credentials, and emits a service_control event carrying a restart_service command payload - terminating the process and all active satellite passes and SDR recordings in a single packet exchange. In a Docker deployment where the container restarts automatically, the attacker can script repeated connections to keep the service perpetually offline, preventing any satellite-tracking operations for the duration of the attack. … |
| Remediation | Upgrade Ground Station to version 0.6.0 or later, which is confirmed as the patched release per the CVE description. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours: identify all Ground Station deployments and current versions, then immediately restrict network access to port 7000 using firewall rules to trusted administrative hosts only. …
