Unauthenticated network Socket.IO command (PR:N/AV:N/UI:N) executes arbitrary SQL yielding admin takeover (C/I/A:H); setup-mode gate noted but treated as low complexity on fresh deployments.

DescriptionCVE.org

ground-station versions before 0.8.0 contain an authentication bypass vulnerability in the setup.restore command that allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary SQL during first-run setup mode. Attackers can invoke setup.restore via Socket.IO to plant admin users and forged session tokens, then authenticate as administrator without credentials for complete application takeover.

AnalysisAI

Unauthenticated attackers with network access to a ground-station instance running a version before 0.8.0 can achieve complete application takeover by invoking the setup.restore Socket.IO command while the server is in first-run setup mode. That command was whitelisted as an unauthenticated operation and passed attacker-supplied SQL straight to the application database, letting an attacker plant administrator accounts and forged session tokens and then authenticate as an administrator with no credentials. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitable when a ground-station instance (version before 0.8.0) is network-reachable and running in first-run setup mode, where the Socket.IO command 'setup.restore' was whitelisted as an unauthenticated command (see backend/common/auth.py in the patch). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment This is a genuinely high-priority, pre-authentication total-compromise flaw, not a CVSS-inflated paper risk. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade to ground-station 0.8.0 or later; the vendor patch (commit 940df2128e57fa779d0ddee2d9726bd829fc61e1) removes 'setup.restore' from the unauthenticated Socket.IO whitelist and replaces raw client-supplied SQL execution with validated, server-side file-based restore, so upgrading is the only complete fix - see https://github.com/sgoudelis/ground-station/security/advisories/GHSA-3mqj-q84c-crjq. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory every ground-station deployment to identify any instance running a version below 0.8.0, prioritizing not-yet-configured, recently provisioned, or staged systems, and either place those systems behind strict network access controls so only trusted provisioning hosts can reach them or shut them down until patched; explicitly block external and lateral access to the setup interface and to the Socket.IO service on those hosts. …
