| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a reachable GetSimple CMS CE 3.3.22 admin panel and that the attacker know (or enumerate) a valid existing username, since the reset only acts on existing users. Exploitation hinges on two product-specific conditions both present by design in this version: the password reset endpoint is accessible without authentication, and the admin login endpoint enforces neither rate limiting nor account lockout, enabling online testing of candidate passwords. The limiting factors are the need to predict/narrow the microtime()-seeded rand() value for the reset moment and to sustain enough login attempts to hit the correct candidate; submitting the reset also overwrites the legitimate admin's password, which is noisy and may alert defenders. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue despite the absence of exploitation telemetry. The CVSS 3.1 score of 9.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/C:H/I:H) reflects a network-reachable, unauthenticated flaw, and the mechanics support that: an attacker can invoke the password reset endpoint anonymously and then brute-force the weakly-generated temporary password online because the admin login enforces no rate limiting or lockout. The core weakness (CWE-338, PHP rand() seeded with microtime()) meaningfully shrinks the keyspace, which raises practical exploitability. However, no EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input - so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active or widespread exploitation yet. I would argue the input's AC:L is slightly optimistic: real exploitation requires predicting/narrowing the microtime()-based seed and sustaining an online guessing campaign, which is closer to AC:H in practice (verify against a working PoC). The most urgent aggravating factor is that no patch exists at publication, leaving no vendor remediation path; this elevates operational risk for anyone running 3.3.22. Net: a real priority for any exposed GetSimple CMS CE admin panel, tempered only by the product's limited deployment footprint. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker submits a password reset request for a known admin username against an internet-exposed GetSimple CMS CE 3.3.22 instance, forcing the application to generate and store a new temporary password derived from PHP rand() seeded with microtime(). The attacker then generates the constrained set of candidate passwords for the reset time window and tests them against the admin login endpoint, which has no rate limiting or lockout, until one succeeds and grants administrator access. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, so this would require custom tooling. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026
Administrator account takeover in GetSimple CMS CE 3.3.22 is achievable because the password reset endpoint is reachable without authentication and, on a reset request for an existing user, immediately writes a hash of a newly generated temporary password that was produced by PHP rand() seeded with microtime(). The time-bounded seed leaves a limited effective candidate space, and because the admin login endpoint enforces neither rate limiting nor account lockout (independent assessment: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N), an unauthenticated remote attacker who knows or enumerates a valid username can generate candidate passwords and test them online until the correct one is found. Exploitation hinges on predicting or narrowing the PRNG value for the reset moment and sustaining enough login attempts, and it is self-defeating in stealth terms because submitting the reset silently overwrites the legitimate administrator's password; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and no vendor-released patch exists, though this is a genuine high-priority issue despite the absence of exploitation telemetry.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch was identified at time of analysis, so remediation must rely on compensating controls until the maintainers publish a fixed build via advisory GHSA-vvhx-56q2-gcjq (https://github.com/GetSimpleCMS-CE/GetSimpleCMS-CE/security/advisories/GHSA-vvhx-56q2-gcjq). Highest-value action: block or disable the unauthenticated password reset endpoint at the web server or reverse proxy and have administrators reset credentials manually, accepting the loss of self-service recovery and the added help-desk load. Second, add rate limiting and account lockout (for example in nginx, a WAF, or fail2ban) in front of the admin login endpoint, since the product itself enforces neither; tune thresholds carefully to avoid locking out legitimate administrators during normal mistyping. Third, restrict the admin panel to trusted source IPs or place it behind an additional authentication layer such as mutual TLS or an identity-aware proxy, trading remote administrative access for a large reduction in attack surface. If source changes are permitted, replace the temporary-password generation in the reset routine with random_int() or random_bytes() and a cryptographically secure hash via password_hash(), which removes the predictability defect (CWE-338) entirely. Finally, monitor for repeated POSTs to the login endpoint and for unexplained reset submissions, and treat any unexpected administrator password change as a compromise indicator: immediately rotate all admin credentials, review accounts and plugins, and audit for persistence, since a successful attack grants full administrator control (C:H/I:H).

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause class is CWE-338, use of a cryptographically weak pseudo-random number generator, applied to a security-sensitive credential. In version 3.3.22 the reset flow generates the temporary password with PHP's rand() and seeds it from microtime(); on modern PHP, rand() is an alias of mt_rand(), a Mersenne Twister-based non-cryptographic PRNG that is deterministic given its seed and was never intended for tokens, passwords, or session identifiers. Because the seed is time-derived, an attacker who knows or approximates the reset timestamp can enumerate candidate seeds and reproduce the exact temporary password sequence, then submit it at the admin login form, which under this design has no rate limiting and no lockout to slow online guessing. The affected component set is captured by the wildcard CPE cpe:2.3:a:getsimplecms-ce:getsimplecms-ce:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and EUVD-2026-91043, and the associated tags (PHP, Information Disclosure, Getsimplecms Ce) reflect a PHP-based CMS whose credential handling exposes predictable secrets. Note the scoring discrepancy: the CVE record carries a 9.1 base score with AC:L, while the independent assessment applies AC:H to reflect the seed-prediction step and the need for sustained online attempts; the impact metrics (C:H/I:H/A:N) and the PR:N unauthenticated vector are consistent. Network-reachable and unauthenticated (AV:N/PR:N/UI:N), but predicting the microtime() seed and brute-forcing candidates online is non-trivial preparation, so AC:H; full admin takeover gives C:H/I:H.

DescriptionCVE.org
GetSimple CMS is a content management system (CMS), and GetSimple CMS CE is the community edition of that CMS. In version 3.3.22, the password reset endpoint can be accessed without authentication. When a reset request is submitted for an existing user, the application generates a new temporary password and immediately stores its hash as the user's new password. The temporary password is generated using PHP rand() seeded with microtime(). Because this seed is time-based and has a limited effective search space, an attacker can generate possible reset password candidates. Since the admin login endpoint does not enforce rate limiting or account lockout, these candidates can be tested online until the correct password is found. Successful exploitation may lead to administrator account takeover. At time of publication, there are no publicly available patches.

Executive ViewAI
A critical authentication flaw in GetSimple CMS CE 3.3.22 allows an unauthenticated attacker to take over any administrator account on an internet-facing site, granting full control over published content, site configuration, and connected hosting or plugin integrations. Because no vendor patch exists and the admin login enforces neither rate limiting nor account lockout, any organization running this version with a discoverable admin username remains exposed until controls are applied at the network edge. Leadership should treat this as an immediate website integrity, brand, and customer-trust risk rather than a routine patch-cycle item.
No vendor patch exists; interim mitigations include blocking or restricting the unauthenticated password reset endpoint and admin login path at the WAF, reverse proxy, or firewall (IP allowlisting, VPN-only access), enforcing rate limiting and account lockout at the network edge, disabling password reset functionality, removing enumerable administrator usernames, rotating all CMS administrator credentials, enabling multi-factor authentication where supported, and alerting on password reset submissions and failed-login bursts. Note that for this vulnerability the CVSS vector (PR:N) indicates the attack is unauthenticated, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
