Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a valid IMAP account on the target server - any low-privilege authenticated user qualifies per the CVSS PR:L metric. Additionally, IMAP compression must be enabled and advertised by the server (the COMPRESS extension must be active); if compression is disabled, the attack vector is eliminated entirely. The attacker must also be able to open multiple simultaneous IMAP connections to the same imap-login process instance, so per-user connection rate limits or strict concurrent connection caps partially reduce impact severity but do not prevent the attack. Exploitation is bounded to availability impact only - there is no path to data exfiltration or session hijacking. Non-IMAP protocols served by OX Dovecot (POP3, LMTP, ManageSieve) are not referenced as affected.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 score of 6.5 with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H accurately reflects a network-accessible, low-complexity attack requiring only authenticated (low-privilege) access, with high availability impact and no confidentiality or integrity consequence. The PR:L metric is significant: any valid IMAP account - including low-privilege shared-mailbox users - is sufficient to mount the attack, broadening the threat surface in hosted email environments where many untrusted users share infrastructure. EPSS data is not provided in the available intelligence, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified precisely. No KEV listing and no public exploits are known, suggesting this is not currently under active or widespread exploitation. Real-world priority is moderate: the attack is repeatable and low-cost for any authenticated attacker, but impact is limited to availability and affects only the imap-login process instances rather than data confidentiality. Organizations running OX Dovecot in ISP, hosting, or enterprise multi-tenant configurations should treat this as a meaningful operational risk despite the absence of public exploit code.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a valid IMAP account connects to the server multiple times, negotiating a memory-intensive compression algorithm (such as DEFLATE with large decompression state requirements) on each connection. After opening only a handful of such concurrent sessions, the imap-login process exhausts its memory ceiling, crashes, and drops all legitimate IMAP sessions it was managing - causing a service outage for other users. No publicly available proof-of-concept code exists at the time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 28, 2026

IMAP compression in OX Dovecot Pro and OX Dovecot CE allows any authenticated user to exhaust the memory of the imap-login process by negotiating a memory-intensive decompression algorithm across multiple simultaneous connections. The process crashes after only a few such connections, terminating all sessions it manages and causing denial of service for all active IMAP users sharing that process. No public exploits are known and CISA KEV does not list this CVE, but the low prerequisite bar - any valid IMAP credential - makes it a meaningful risk in multi-tenant or hosted email environments.

RemediationAI

The primary remediation is to update to the non-vulnerable version of OX Dovecot Pro or OX Dovecot CE as specified in the vendor advisory at https://documentation.open-xchange.com/dovecot/security/advisories/csaf/2026/oxdc-adv-2026-0003.json; exact fixed version numbers should be confirmed there. If immediate patching is not possible, the vendor recommends disabling IMAP compression entirely, which eliminates the attack vector at the cost of increased bandwidth usage for clients that rely on compressed sessions - acceptable in most LAN or well-connected environments. A secondary workaround is to reduce the maximum number of connections handled per imap-login process, which limits the blast radius of a successful attack (fewer legitimate sessions are dropped per crash) but does not prevent repeated attacks and introduces a performance penalty under normal high-concurrency load. Neither workaround substitutes for patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption). IMAP compression is standardized in RFC 4978, allowing clients to negotiate compression algorithms (such as DEFLATE) during session setup. In OX Dovecot's architecture, the imap-login process manages multiple client connections before they are handed off; when a client selects a compression algorithm that requires large per-connection decompression state buffers, each such connection consumes a disproportionate amount of memory. Because the process-level memory ceiling is shared across all connections it handles, an attacker can force the process to hit its memory limit with only a handful of crafted connections, killing the process and abruptly terminating all legitimate sessions within it. Both the commercial (ox_dovecot_pro) and community (ox_dovecot_ce) distributions of OX Dovecot are affected, as indicated by CPE strings cpe:2.3:a:open-xchange_gmbh:ox_dovecot_pro:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and cpe:2.3:a:open-xchange_gmbh:ox_dovecot_ce:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*.

DescriptionCVE.org

An attacker that has valid credentials can select a compression algorithm for the IMAP connection whose decompression state requires a large amount of memory, and open several such connections. The memory limit of the process is reached with only a few connections, terminating the process and all connections it handles, which can cause degradation or denial of service for IMAP. Disable IMAP compression. Alternatively limit the number of connections handled by a single imap-login process, though this has a performance impact. Update to non-vulnerable version. No publicly available exploits are known.
