Local ioctl requires shell access (AV:L); ZFS receive delegation is non-root but still a granted privilege (PR:L); kernel heap corruption yields full CIA impact.

DescriptionCVE.org

The ZFS_IOC_RECV_NEW ioctl, in the heal receive path, similarly truncated a 64-bit payload size to a 32-bit integer for allocation, then used the original 64-bit size as the length for a byteswap operation.

A local user with the "receive" delegated ZFS permission can trigger kernel memory corruption via ZFS_IOC_RECV_NEW by sending a crafted receive stream in heal mode.

AnalysisAI

Kernel memory corruption in FreeBSD's ZFS subsystem allows a local user with the delegated 'receive' ZFS permission to trigger a heap-based buffer overflow via the ZFS_IOC_RECV_NEW ioctl. The flaw stems from an integer truncation: a 64-bit payload size is silently narrowed to 32 bits for heap allocation, but the original 64-bit value is then used as the length for a subsequent byteswap operation - writing beyond the allocated buffer into kernel memory. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires three concrete prerequisites: (1) local shell access to the target FreeBSD system; (2) the attacking account must hold the ZFS 'receive' delegated permission, which is a non-default privilege that an administrator must explicitly grant via 'zfs allow ... … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 score of 7.8 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) accurately captures the local-only attack surface, which meaningfully constrains real-world risk compared to remote-exploitable kernel flaws. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation The primary remediation is to apply the patch levels published in FreeBSD Security Advisory FreeBSD-SA-26:40.zfs: upgrade to FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE-p16, 14.4-RELEASE-p7, 15.0-RELEASE-p11, or 15.1-RELEASE-p1 as applicable. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours: Audit all FreeBSD systems for ZFS 'receive' delegations and immediately revoke delegation from users who do not require it. …
