Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the gateway to sit behind an upstream WAF or reverse proxy that enforces method-based access controls, and requires the request to be a POST with Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded so the path-length-fallback branch that reads X-HTTP-Method-Override is entered; the target verb's handler must also exist and be routable in the gateway. Limiting factors: the bug only confers advantage when perimeter method filtering is the control being bypassed - deployments with no method-filtering proxy, or that already strip the header, or that enforce authorization inside the service, are effectively unaffected, and no authentication is needed but the override path is gated on the specific POST + form-urlencoded content type.

Impact

The input CVSS of 9.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/C:H/I:H/A:H) overstates real-world risk: the vulnerability only yields a security benefit to the attacker when an upstream WAF or reverse proxy is actually enforcing method-based access controls in front of the gateway, which is a specific deployment condition rather than a default one, arguing for AC:H and impacts well below C:H/I:H/A:H. The concrete impact is reaching HTTP handlers (e.g. DELETE/PUT) the perimeter intended to block - primarily an integrity concern, with confidentiality/availability effects contingent on which handlers become reachable. Corroborating signals point the same way: EPSS is only 0.18% (7th percentile), not in CISA KEV, and no public PoC is identified, so this is a genuine hardening issue rather than a mass-exploitation emergency. That said, where such a proxy allow-list is the sole control on state-changing endpoints the bypass can be serious, so an operator matching that pattern - even a mid-sized municipal IT team running a gateway behind a method-filtering WAF - should schedule the update rather than defer it, while purely gateway-native RBAC deployments are largely unaffected.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An organization fronts its grpc-gateway with a WAF configured to allow only POST to a sensitive resource path. An unauthenticated attacker sends a POST with Content-Type application/x-www-form-urlencoded and the header X-HTTP-Method-Override: DELETE; the WAF sees an allowed POST and passes it, but the gateway rewrites the method and invokes the DELETE handler, deleting the resource. No public PoC is identified, but the technique is straightforward to reproduce from the description.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 02, 2026

HTTP method confusion in grpc-ecosystem's grpc-gateway v2.28.0 lets remote clients bypass method-based access controls enforced by an upstream WAF or reverse proxy. The ServeMux honors a client-supplied X-HTTP-Method-Override header on POST requests carrying Content-Type application/x-www-form-urlencoded, rewriting the request method to any attacker-chosen verb (e.g. DELETE, PUT) before routing, so a proxy that only permits POST is fooled while the gateway dispatches to a restricted handler. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and EPSS is low (0.18%), but the upstream fix is confirmed via commit 72123cd4.

RemediationAI

Update to a grpc-gateway release that includes fix commit 72123cd4f32545f6e1376873f412dcdcbcf29acc (the patched version tag was not asserted in the structured feed - confirm the exact release from the repository tags before pinning). Because the override remains enabled by default even after upgrading, explicitly harden the mux by constructing it with runtime.NewServeMux(runtime.WithDisableHTTPMethodOverride()), which stops X-HTTP-Method-Override from rewriting the method while leaving the application/x-www-form-urlencoded path-length fallback intact (disable that separately with WithDisablePathLengthFallback if HTML-form method emulation is not needed). As a compensating control if you cannot rebuild immediately, strip or reject the X-HTTP-Method-Override header at the proxy/WAF layer before it reaches the gateway, and stop relying on perimeter HTTP-method allow-lists as the sole authorization boundary - enforce authorization in the gRPC service/gateway itself; the trade-off is that stripping the header breaks any legitimate client depending on method-override form emulation. See the vendor doc section 'Disabling X-HTTP-Method-Override' added in the same commit.

Technical ContextAI · show details

grpc-gateway is a widely used Go reverse-proxy library that translates RESTful JSON/HTTP requests into gRPC calls, generated from protobuf annotations. The affected behavior lives in runtime/mux.go: ServeMux.ServeHTTP implements an HTML-form-friendly 'path length fallback' where a POST with application/x-www-form-urlencoded can be routed as another method, and within that path it reads X-HTTP-Method-Override and substitutes its value as the effective method with no allow-list of permitted verbs. This is CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key) in spirit - the routing/authorization decision is driven by an untrusted, client-controlled header. The commit adds a WithDisableHTTPMethodOverride ServeMuxOption; note the override remains ENABLED by default and the separate WithDisablePathLengthFallback controls the related fallback behavior.

DescriptionCVE.org

grpc-gateway v2.28.0 is vulnerable to Incorrect Access Control. The application processes the X-HTTP-Method-Override header in ServeMux.ServeHTTP without restricting allowed methods. When a POST request with Content-Type application/x-www-form-urlencoded includes this header, the request method is rewritten to an arbitrary attacker-supplied value before routing. This allows bypassing method-based access controls enforced by upstream proxies or WAFs.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

grpc-gateway v2.28.0 contains a critical authentication bypass allowing remote attackers to override HTTP methods via header injection, circumventing access controls enforced by firewalls and reverse proxies. Organizations using method-based authorization policies with grpc-gateway can have restricted API operations exposed to unauthenticated attackers.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

Block X-HTTP-Method-Override header at WAF and reverse proxy layer; enforce HTTP method validation at the application level rather than relying solely on proxy controls; implement rate-limiting on suspicious method patterns; monitor HTTP request logs for method-override attempts; for interim risk reduction, evaluate deploying development branch with upstream commit 72123cd4 pending vendor patch release.
